The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) is a federal agency within the United States Department of the Interior that is responsible for providing services to Native American tribes and Alaska Native communities. Its mission is to enhance the quality of life, promote economic opportunity, and protect the lives and property of American Indians, Alaska Natives and affiliated island communities. The BIA manages a variety of programs, including education, natural resources management, housing, law enforcement, social services and economic development. It also works to uphold the government-to-government relationship between the United States and tribal governments. The BIA has a significant presence in Native American territories throughout the country, including Alaska, Hawaii, and the continental United States.
