The National Hockey League (NHL) is a professional ice hockey league in North America consisting of 31 teams, 24 of which are based in the United States. Founded in 1917, the NHL is one of the oldest professional sports leagues in North America. It is composed of two conferences, the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference, each with two divisions. Teams play 82 regular season games, followed by playoffs to determine the Stanley Cup champion. The NHL has a large following in the United States, with millions of fans tuning in to watch games on television and in person each year.
