The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) is a United States government agency established by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA). The PBGC is charged with protecting the retirement benefits of over 34 million workers and retirees who participate in defined benefit pension plans. PBGC's primary role is to insure these plans in case of plan termination, and to pay pension benefits to participants up to certain limits.
