The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is a government agency in the United States responsible for overseeing the construction and maintenance of the state's transportation system. Established in 1991, TxDOT operates as a government-owned corporation under the Texas Transportation Commission, which is appointed by the governor. TxDOT manages more than 195,000 miles of highways, including more than 43,000 miles of farm-to-market and ranch-to-market roads, and over 4,000 bridges. TxDOT also manages airports, public transit systems, railroads, ports, and waterways. Its mission is to provide safe and reliable transportation services to the citizens of Texas while being responsible stewards of public funds.
