Data Platform Architect:
Qualys is building its next-generation, microservices-based data platform and middleware, a SaaS cloud security platform processing 100M+ transactions and terabytes of data daily. This role is responsible for the architecture, scalability, and availability of Qualys's relational and NoSQL databases, search engines, graph databases, caching layers, big data systems, and message pipelines, operating at a scale of millions of transactions per second, trillions of datapoints, and billions of daily messages, with sub-second latency requirements.
Responsibilities :
- Own the architecture, availability, and scalability of Qualys's relational databases, NoSQL databases, search engines, graph databases, caches, big data systems, and message pipelines — operating at millions of transactions per second, trillions of datapoints, and billions of daily messages with sub-second latency.
- Provide the data platform as a service to all applications built at Qualys, partnering with engineering, product, and operations to align platform capabilities with business objectives.
- Sit on the architecture review board, evaluating application architectures, identifying data scale needs, and defining guidelines for adopting new data technologies (via POCs and cutting-edge technology evaluation).
- Manage day-1 and day-2 operations at scale, including zero-downtime cloud migration/bursting and continuous improvement of scale, availability, and cost efficiency across cloud platforms.
- Apply ML/AI techniques to improve platform availability and performance while managing operational costs.
- Solve complex, high-risk data platform problems and contribute to new platform standards and design principles.
- Enforce secure coding practices and security fundamentals, and identify key instrumentation/metrics needs, across teams.
- Advise application teams on best practices and lead knowledge-sharing sessions on guidelines, POC findings, and industry trends.
- Contribute enhancements back to open-source projects used in the Qualys ecosystem.
- Mentor engineers and contribute to the team's technical growth.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
- 12+ years of hands-on experience developing SaaS-based software products for service-oriented deployments on public cloud (AWS, GCP, Azure, or OCI) or private cloud.
- Prior experience in a lead engineer or architect role.
- Hands-on experience with both RDBMS and NoSQL database systems.
- Experience designing or building data platforms using Cassandra, Redis, Elasticsearch, Kafka, Ceph, Flink, Spark, or comparable technologies.
- Proficiency in Java, including object-oriented design, prototyping, development, testing, and profiling.
- Working knowledge of JVM internals (garbage collection, heap/stack management, class loading, profiling).
- Strong foundation in data structures and algorithms.
- Experience with infrastructure orchestration and automation tools (e.g., Terraform).
- Hands-on experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines.
- Demonstrated ability to write production-ready code, including well-tested, well-designed APIs.
- Experience working within agile software development methodologies.
- Ability to clearly communicate technical concepts to both technical and cross-functional stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience building a data platform from the ground up.
- Contributions to open-source projects.
- Experience with data encryption and data security standards.
- Experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Experience with monitoring tools such as Graphite, Grafana, or Prometheus.
- Experience with HashiCorp tools (Consul, Vault, Terraform).
- Experience with configuration management tools (Chef, Puppet, or Ansible).
- Familiarity with build tools such as Maven, Ant, or Gradle.
