Job Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Assistant Sommelier to join our esteemed culinary team at Constance Halaveli, Maldives. This is an exciting opportunity to work within a luxury resort environment, supporting our Head Sommelier in delivering exceptional wine experiences to our discerning international guests. The successful candidate will play a vital role in curating wine selections, providing expert recommendations, and ensuring impeccable service standards across our fine dining establishments.

• Assist in the selection, procurement, and management of our wine collection, ensuring quality and variety across all price points • Provide knowledgeable wine recommendations to guests, considering their preferences, cuisine selections, and budget requirements • Execute precise wine service techniques, including opening, decanting, and serving wines at optimal temperatures
• Conduct wine tastings and educational sessions for guests and staff to enhance appreciation and knowledge • Maintain detailed records of wine inventory, stock rotation, and cellar conditions to ensure optimal preservation • Collaborate with the culinary team to develop and refine food and wine pairing menus • Assist in training and mentoring junior service staff on wine service protocols and product knowledge
• Monitor and manage wine stock levels, placing orders and liaising with suppliers to maintain availability • Ensure compliance with all health, safety, and licensing regulations pertaining to beverage service • Contribute to the development of wine lists and promotional materials that reflect the resort's standards • Provide exceptional customer service, addressing guest enquiries and concerns with professionalism and courtesy

Qualifications

• Proven experience as an Assistant Sommelier, wine server, or similar role in a fine dining or luxury hospitality setting • Comprehensive knowledge of wine regions, varietals, production methods, and flavour profiles
• Demonstrated expertise in food and wine pairing principles and applications • Strong understanding of wine service standards, including proper handling, storage, and presentation techniques • Proficiency with point-of-sale (POS) systems and inventory management software • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage guests from diverse backgrounds
• Ability to work effectively within a team environment and support senior staff members • Desirable: Sommelier certification or formal wine education qualification • Desirable: Knowledge of spirits, cocktails, and other beverages • Desirable: Fluency in additional languages, particularly French or other European languages • Desirable: Previous experience working in a resort or international hospitality environment
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining the highest standards of service • Physical capability to stand for extended periods and lift wine bottles and cases regularly
