Who Are We?

We at Pine Rest believe in the power of healing and that everyone in our community has the right to expert care for mental health and substance use disorders. We are much more than just the third largest non-profit behavioral health system in the country, our 220-acre main campus, and our network of clinical sites across Michigan. We are a tight-knit community of healers who witness the impact of our life-changing work each day.

Each day, we are closing the gaps in access to care. We are innovating through leading-edge research, testing, programs, and treatment modalities that others replicate across the country. Our services include a state-of-the-art psychiatric urgent care center and a soon-to-be-built pediatric behavioral health center, outpatient, inpatient, partial hospitalization (day programs), assessment and testing, residential, addiction treatment and specialty services such as crisis response, employee assistance programs, forensic psychiatry and psychology, and neuromodulation. On-the-job educational programs for nurses, psychologists, advanced practice providers, psychiatrists, and chaplains are equipping the next generation of care providers.

We are passionate about serving and are honored to be a part of this incredible work.

What Will You Do?
As an Associate Chaplain at Pine Rest, you’ll be part of tight-knit team that believes in the healing power of your expertise and compassion.  This role provides emotional and spiritual support to patients, families and employees regarding their personal, religious, or philosophical needs in accordance with Pine Rest’s mission and values. Our associate chaplains are pursuing their CPE and provide spiritual care on an individual, group or class level. Mature in their faith, they are compassionate about serving individuals that are experiencing a behavioral health crisis. As a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team, our associate chaplains have an understanding of psychology and provide support and input for the holistic care of the persons served. As employees experience work stress and emotional fatigue, associate chaplains offer supportive care so employees can continue to work effectively. Associate chaplains are able to relate to a wide range of ages, faiths, backgrounds, and ethnicities. They are dedicated to excellent customer service, enthusiastic about the care we offer, and foster a sense of belonging and empowerment in a diverse workplace.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide spiritual comfort through individual and group prayer and scripture reading, share devotional readings/thoughts, music, communion, and meet individual spiritual needs.

  • Respect cultural and ethnic diversity, yet keep our Christian foundational values and Christian identity.

  • Periodically conduct Sunday worship services.

  • Comfortable with assisting patients and residents with their spiritual needs. Part of this process is performing spiritual assessments and providing spiritual care based upon the assessments, and memorial/funeral services for patients or residents who pass away. Memorial services have been interactive in the past, allowing grieving staff and residents a chance to speak informally at the service. There is also prayer, music, and a message of hope.

  • Limited documentation of the visit is helpful to provide the staff with insight into the spiritual needs of the patients or residents for continuity of care.

  • Documents in the Electronic Charting software summaries of individual and group ministry with patients, according to Pastoral Services Department standards.

What Does This Role Require?

Education/Experience:

  • Knowledge of theology, spiritual development, and pastoral counseling at a level normally acquired through completion of a Master’s of Divinity degree or equivalent training at an accredited theological seminary or school.
