This position is responsible for coordinating all aspects of the transplant from the initial consultation to admission or outpatient transplant. Including the financial, physiological and psychosocial assessment of the patient and their family. This position is responsible for some or all of the below functions depending on what type of transplant is being coordinated. This position may be required to access and administer medications within their scope of practice and according to state law.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and oversees the scheduling of inpatient admissions and outpatient visits with indicated tests and provides consultation as needed.
  • Verifies third-party payment and pre-transplant benefits and assists families in seeking alternative sources of funding. Coordinates the pre-payment of fees to initiate continue the donor search.
  • Coordinates pre-transplant education process including insurance coverage, donor search, clinical needs, supportive requirements.
  • Monitors and coordinates patient/family before, during and after the transplant process for physical, emotional and/or psychosocial needs and intervenes when appropriate.
  • Communicates clinical and non-clinical patient information during BMT conferences.
  • Coordinates with donor centers regarding the shipment, transport and delivery of the marrow to ensure its timely arrival.
  • Receives requests for unrelated donor searches from BMT Providers and initiates searches within the National Marrow Donor Program and other international registries.
  • Advises the patient and referring physician concerning optimal donor search strategy based on patient HLA type, clinical condition, and financial resources.
  • Reviews search results returned by each registry and/or lab; presents search results to the BMT attending or referring physician; and provides search result information for the patient, physician and insurance company.
  • Gathers clinical information for workup and transplant treatment plans; arranges for shipment of all final samples and donor workup; and transports the unrelated donor marrow to the hospital.
  • Provides clinical update on patient status to the donor centers and the insurance companies. Follows up with referring physicians about initial searches.
  • BMT Coordinators are not responsible for post-transplant care and coordination. Coordinates post-transplant hand off for follow-up with patients to their referring physicians.
  • Develops and maintains clinical database on bone marrow transplant patients.
  • Responsible for entering orders within EMR for providers.
  • Communicates in a frequent systematic manner with provider at every step of coordination.
  • May request tissue re-typing of patients, families and prospective donors.
  • At the discretion of department operational and patient care needs, this position is required to work rotating schedules, which may include variable hours, weekends, nights, and holidays to meet the staffing and patient care demands of a 24/7 complex health system. Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance during assigned shifts is considered an essential function of the role.

  • Ability to provide care to the population served.
  • Demonstrated availability to work variable and rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, in a 24/7 patient care environment.
  • Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills.
  • Ability to coordinate the entire transplant process, from initial consultation through transplant.
  • Ability to educate patients and their families about the transplant process.
  • Ability to critically think through the nursing process.

Qualifications

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing or equivalency.
  • One year of healthcare experience.

Licenses Required

  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Utah, or obtain one within 90 days of hire under the interstate compact if switching residency to State of Utah. Must maintain current Interstate Compact (multi-state) license if residency is not being changed to Utah.

  • Experience with third party payers.
  • Experience in bone marrow transplant program or hematology/oncology.

  • This position involves light work that may exert up to 20 pounds and may consistently require light work involving lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving objects involving patient care or medical equipment.
