Position Summary

We are seeking a hands-on Cable Systems Support Technician to support telecommunications operations and low-voltage infrastructure within a federal healthcare environment. The technician will be responsible for installing, repairing, testing, troubleshooting, and maintaining copper and fiber cabling systems and associated telecommunications spaces.

This position will also support day-to-day service requests, Moves/Adds/Changes (MAC), infrastructure projects, equipment moves, and facility modernization activities. The ideal candidate is comfortable working independently in an occupied facility and has a strong understanding of structured cabling and telecommunications infrastructure.



Key Responsibilities

  • Install, terminate, label, test, certify, troubleshoot, and repair copper structured cabling, including Category 5e/6/6A systems and associated patch panels, jacks, patch cords, and pathways.
  • Support optical fiber installation, patching, basic fault isolation, cleaning/inspection, and coordination of fiber testing or repair activities.
  • Perform first- and second-level field support for inside cable plant, Main Distribution Frames (MDFs), telecommunications rooms (TRs), cross-connects, customer-premises equipment, and related Layer 1 infrastructure.
  • Support telecommunications Moves, Adds, and Changes (MAC), workstation relocations, equipment moves, and restoration of voice/data connectivity.
  • Assist with site surveys, cable pathway evaluation, material identification, implementation planning, and project closeout documentation.
  • Perform cable dressing, rack/ladder-rack support, labeling, grounding/bonding support, firestopping, and housekeeping in accordance with site requirements and industry best practices.
  • Use copper/fiber test equipment to validate continuity, wiremap, performance, and end-to-end connectivity; document results and escalate faults requiring engineering or vendor support.
  • Support project teams during infrastructure upgrades, equipment replacement, network cutovers, physical security deployments, and other low-voltage modernization work.
  • Maintain accurate service-ticket notes, test records, as-builts, labeling records, inventory information, and work completion documentation.
  • Perform work in accordance with applicable ANSI/TIA standards, BICSI practices, NEC requirements, customer safety rules, infection-control/site procedures, and Federal facility access requirements.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Two or more years of hands-on structured cabling, telecommunications, or low-voltage field experience; candidates with one year of experience plus relevant BICSI training/certification may also be considered.
  • Working knowledge of copper termination, testing, labeling, patching, cable pathways, racks/cabinets, and telecommunications-room practices.
  • Familiarity with ANSI/TIA-568 and related telecommunications infrastructure standards; ability to follow drawings, floor plans, cable schedules, and work orders.
  • Ability to use common field tools and test equipment and to troubleshoot Layer 1 connectivity problems methodically.
  • Ability to work independently in an occupied healthcare environment while coordinating professionally with customers, project managers, technicians, vendors, and facility staff.
  • High school diploma or equivalent. A college degree is not required for candidates with sufficient relevant field experience.
  • Ability to satisfy customer onboarding, background suitability, badging, safety, and site-access requirements.


Preferred Qualifications / Certifications

  • BICSI Installer 1, Installer 2 Copper, Installer 2 Optical Fiber, BICSI Technician, or equivalent industry training.
  • Manufacturer training in structured cabling, fiber optics, or test/certification platforms (Fluke Networks or equivalent).
  • OSHA 10 or other construction/low-voltage safety training.
  • Prior experience supporting Federal, VA, healthcare, campus, or other mission-critical occupied facilities.
  • Experience supporting IP cameras, access-control devices, wireless access points, or other network-connected low-voltage endpoints is a plus.


Schedule

  • 8-hour shift
  • Weekday/night overtime availability
  • Weekend overtime availability
