Job Summary and Responsibilities

This more complex Level II Cardiopulmonary Technician position is responsible for higher level patient acuity – performing remote surveillance for multiple locations, specific to cardio-pulmonary rhythms via a central monitoring station, and for recognizing, recording and reporting potentially dangerous rhythm changes and arrhythmias following established standards and procedures per applicable regulatory requirements. Work is primarily performed in a centralized monitoring unit under the direction of a Registered Nurse. Each Technician can potentially watch up to 64 patients due to the highly advanced IT technology capabilities. The Level II Cardiopulmonary Technician will serve as a mentor and preceptor for Level I - Cardiopulmonary Techs. The incumbent will accurately recognize cardiac rhythms and follow command center policy. Accurately take appropriate action and follow established protocols in notifying local RN staff of changes in cardiac rhythm and arrhythmias. The incumbent is expected to follow proper communication channels in handling routine and emergency situations; follow established protocols/procedures; have awareness of and strive to improve patient outcomes and department metrics.

  • ●Monitors patient’s cardiac rhythms and/or oxygen saturation using appropriate cardio-pulmonary monitoring equipment; obtains a baseline ECG strip on all monitored patients according to department guidelines; records and posts cardiac strips following established procedures. Updates and verifies patient data in the information system; maintains unit/department-specific records as assigned.
  • ●Recognizes rhythms with the potential to alter the patient’s physiology and obtains a documentary ECG strip; immediately reports all arrhythmias to the RN responsible for the patient following established protocols.
  • ●Maintains current knowledge of the technical operation and capabilities of the central monitoring station; maintains alarm systems according to established protocols and responds appropriately to monitor alarms; identifies/troubleshoots routine technical problems with the monitors and sends work orders for maintenance/clinical engineering repairs as necessary.
  • ●Handles incoming and outgoing communications, answers questions, and assists staff per established procedures.
  • ● Provides/gives accurate shift reports to other monitor technicians, relating to patient’s condition and rhythm status consistently at every shift change.
  • ●Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with all parties involved.

Job Requirements

Required

  • Three months of post-secondary education/training in regard to EKG technology, Emergency medicine, Nursing, Exercise Science AND
  • Minimum 2 years of recent (within the past year) related healthcare work experience that would demonstrate attainment of the requisite job knowledge/abilities. 

OR

  • Graduation from the following accredited program, including EKG Interpretation: -Nursing Assistant (or Military Medical Specialty Training), or-Medical Assistant or-Emergency Medical Tech (EMT) AND
  • Minimum 2 years of recent (within the past year) related healthcare work experience that would demonstrate attainment of the requisite job knowledge/abilities

Preferred

  • Graduation from the following accredited programs, including EKG Interpretation, Monitor Technician, CRAT or CCT
  • Minimum 3 years of experience 
  • Associates Other Associate’s degree in EKG Technology.
  • Two years of work experience as a monitor tech or patient care technician
  • Certified Cardiographic Technician
