About this role

Overview

Kimley-Horn is seeking a Chemical Process / Natural Gas Engineer to join our team. This role offers the opportunity to contribute immediately to existing Natural Gas infrastructure design programs while helping build and grow process engineering capabilities to serve advanced energy infrastructure projects. This is not a remote position. 

Responsibilities

As a critical member of the team, you will perform a variety of engineering tasks, collaborate with team members, and could supervise team members and manage projects. You will receive both on-the-job and formal training as well as mentorship, camaraderie, and exposure to plan production, project financials, and client interactions. 

  • Support planning and design for renewable natural gas (RNG), biogas, digester gas, and landfill gas conversion facilities.
  • Coordinate process simulations, equipment layouts, and heat integration for RNG, SAF, eNG, eMethanol, and other biofuel pathways.
  • Develop and review technoeconomic models, technical reports, lifecycle carbon analyses, and tax credit eligibility documentation.
  • Design and analyze natural gas transmission and distribution pipeline systems and surface facilities. 
  • Develop key design schematics, smart 2D P&IDs, and 3D plant models using AutoCAD and CADWorx.
  • Draft Process Control Narratives (PCNs) covering control logic, system architecture, and operating philosophy.
  • Apply High RAM principles and safety lifecycles, including SIS and SIF, throughout process design.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, environmental, and Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) teams.
  • Support project management activities including budgeting, scheduling, client communication, and project execution.
  • Conduct field visits, site investigations, startup support, and construction observation activities.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of relevant experience, including a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering (or a related engineering field).
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain within 12 months.
  • Experience with process simulation/modeling tools such as BR&E ProMax, Aspen HYSYS, and/or Aspen Plus.
  • Proficiency in CADWorx and/or AutoCAD, including smart P&ID development and 3D plant modeling.
  • Experience with process monitoring, controls, PLC/DCS systems, and Advanced Process Control (APC).
  • Experience with PHA techniques and process safety frameworks such as PSMS and OSHA PSM.
  • Experience with air permitting, emissions control systems, facility design, and pipeline safety regulations including 49 CFR Part 192.
  • Experience with task management, concept design, client coordination, and project management support.
  • Strong sense of urgency and self-initiative to meet client deadlines.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
