SCOPE

The Community Development Coordinator is responsible for coordinating provincial community development initiatives focused on raising awareness, prevention, education, healing, and advocacy related to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG).

The Community Development Coordinator provides education, training, and capacity-building support to ONWA Chapters, Councils, Indigenous communities, service providers, and community partners throughout Ontario. The position supports the development and delivery of educational resources, toolkits, presentations, awareness campaigns, and community-based initiatives that promote understanding of MMIWG and strengthen community responses.

The Community Development Coordinator works collaboratively with internal departments, community partners, stakeholders, and Indigenous communities to coordinate knowledge sharing, support families and communities impacted by MMIWG, facilitate culturally grounded healing opportunities, and ensure program deliverables are achieved in accordance with funding agreements, organizational priorities, and community needs.

The position is responsible for provincial program coordination, education and awareness initiatives, event planning, resource development, community engagement, reporting, stakeholder relationship building, and information sharing.

QUALIFICATIONS

SKILLS:

• Post-secondary diploma or bachelor’s degree in Indigenous Studies, Education, Community Development, Social Services, or a related discipline, or a combination of relevant education and experience.
  
• Minimum three (3) years of experience supporting and advocating for Indigenous women, families, and communities.
  
• Demonstrated experience facilitating workshops, training sessions, presentations, and community engagement activities.
  
• Strong coordination, planning, and project management skills.
  
• Proven ability to work collaboratively and independently while managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
  
• Strong relationship-building skills with the ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with ONWA membership, partners, stakeholders, and community members.
  
• Excellent verbal, written, presentation, and facilitation skills.
  
• Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
  
• Ability to develop and deliver educational materials and learning opportunities for diverse audiences.
  
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, databases, customer relationship management (CRM) systems, virtual platforms, and general office technology.
  
• Experience planning and coordinating community events, awareness initiatives, and educational activities.

KNOWLEDGE:

• Knowledge and understanding of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Two-Spirit, and Gender Diverse People (MMIWG) and Indigenous gender-based violence.
  
• Knowledge of current issues impacting Indigenous women, families, and communities.
  
• Knowledge of Indigenous cultures, traditions, teachings, ceremonies, and community protocols.
  
• Understanding of trauma-informed practices and culturally grounded approaches to healing and community engagement.
  
• Knowledge of community development principles, capacity-building strategies, and community-based education approaches.
  
• Knowledge of program data collection, reporting requirements, and program evaluation methods.
  
• Understanding of nonprofit organizations, partnership development, and collaborative community relationships.
  
• Knowledge of available community supports, counselling services, healing resources, and referral networks.
  
• Ability to speak an Indigenous language is considered an asset.
