You will work with the Site Leads and Medical Directors of individual sites and the leadership of Primary Care at Boston Medical Center Health System (BMCHS). This role is central to the System strategy to support primary care access as BMCHS grows and provides the opportunity to develop, shape and lead these community-focused practice sites from the ground up. This role ensures high-quality, patient-centered care while supporting provider engagement, operational efficiency, and alignment with the system’s mission and goals. The Head of Primary Care serves as the clinical voice for all non-BMC Main Campus sites, working collaboratively with practice management, nursing leadership, and system leaders.

This position will directly report to the Chief Clinical Officer of BMCHS or designee.  The position will also maintain relationships with other physician leadership in Primary Care at Brighton, South and Main Campus, including residency leadership at BMC Brighton.  This position will interface operationally with the VP of Primary Care for BMCHS.

Individuals applying for this role should have at least 10 years’ experience practicing in primary care, have served as a Site Lead, practice Medical Director or similar administrative role, and be board certified in internal medicine or family medicine.  Experience with value-based care, informatics or network strategy is a plus.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership

  • Oversee the Community Hospital Primary Care Practice sites at South, Norwood, Whitman and Brighton, as well as any other launched sites outside of Main Campus, in collaboration with Site Leads and Medical Directors as each site.

  • Promote evidence-based clinical standards, quality improvement initiatives, patient engagement and satisfaction, and patient safety practices.

  • Take initiative with others on the team to identify, implement, evaluate, and refine new methods of health care delivery and operating models in Primary Care.

  • Foster a collaborative, team-based care model that integrates physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and staff to provide high-quality interdisciplinary care.

Physician & Staff Engagement

  • Grow employed cFTE at all primary care sites, leading recruitment and retention of clinicians.

  • Monitor the performance and productivity of medical providers to ensure that they meet organizational standards and intervene in a timely fashion when such standards are not met.

  • Serve as a mentor and advocate for practice physicians and APPs.

  • Facilitate communication between site providers and health system leadership.

  • Promote a culture of teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.

System Integration & Strategic Alignment

  • Ensure the site’s goals and performance align with the health system’s primary care strategy, including the management of community models of care, productivity and panel management.

  • Engage with community medical staff and leadership on clinical care and quality initiatives.

  • Engage with the Office of the CMIO on informatics, technology-enabled care delivery, and primary care EPIC workflows to improve patient care, clinician satisfaction, and operational efficiency.

  • Engage with the Chief Clinical Officer on network functions and strategy related to primary care.

  • Support initiatives related to value-based care, population health, and care coordination across the system.

Operational & Practice Management

  • Partner with the VP of Primary Care and other operational staff on operational planning, patient flow, scheduling, and resource utilization.

  • Support site-level performance on key metrics: access, patient experience, panel management, productivity, and quality benchmarks.

  • Provide input into staffing models, workflow design, and technology adoption to improve efficiency.

  • Help resolve operational or clinical issues that arise within the site.

  • Ensure that the clinical team understands the components and drivers of value-based care and manage the components of total cost of care that can be impacted by effective clinical teams.
