About this role

JOB DESCRIPTION:

A Constituency Advisor is a confidential employee responsible for the administration of the Constituency Office of a Member of the Legislative Assembly.

Under the general supervision of the MLA, duties may include:

 

  • Providing assistance and advocacy for constituents in their dealings with the provincial government, either directly or through appropriate referrals.
  • Supporting the MLA’s work within their communities through community outreach and liaison.
  • Providing information to constituents about provincial government legislation and policies, including the MLA and government’s position on provincial issues.
  • Managing social media accounts, including designing graphics, reels, content creation, sharing government announcements and monitoring.
  • Preparing communications materials, including advertising, householders, and mailings by the MLA, newsletters, and websites.
  • Managing the day-to-day operations of the Constituency Office, including correspondence, bookkeeping, information management and other office duties, as required.
  • Recruiting, training and supervising Constituency Office volunteers and practicum students, as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:


    • Excellent relationship-building, and communication skills, with the ability to write clearly, concisely, and professionally for a wide range of audiences.
    • Experience developing communications strategies including: written and visual content, graphic design, photography, videography, storytelling, and digital communications across multiple platforms.
    • Proficiency in social media management including: content creation, campaign planning, trend awareness, promotional materials, signage, reels, video production, and editing.
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and adapt effectively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
    • Strong organizational, scheduling, and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize competing demands, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and consistently meet deadlines.
    • Experience planning and coordinating community events, public engagement initiatives, and outreach activities, including recruiting, scheduling, and supporting volunteers.
    • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective communications, advocacy, and outreach strategies while exercising diplomacy, discretion, and sound political judgment.
    • Strong administrative skills, including experience managing the day-to-day operations of a community office. Proficiency with computer applications, word processing, bookkeeping, scheduling, and general clerical functions is required.
    • Ability to interpret and communicate complex policies, legislation, and procedures in a clear and accessible manner. Demonstrated initiative, problem-solving skills, and the ability to learn new systems, processes, and technologies quickly.
    • Trauma-informed practice and workplace experience, as well as Indigenous cultural awareness and safety training, are considered assets.
    • Extensive knowledge of the Nanaimo–Lantzville constituency, including its communities, demographics, local organizations, and key issues.
    • Ability to travel throughout the constituency and work evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays as required.
    • Fluency in French and/or Mandarin would be an asset.
    • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle is required.

     


    OTHER DETAILS 


    • As per collective agreement, including extended health and dental plan, BC Public Service Pension Plan, 4 weeks paid vacation (pro-rated), 12 days paid sick leave, and other paid leave provisions and benefits.
    • This is a bargaining unit position: BCGEU Local 701
