Job Description

In this role, students support software development activities for mission-critical systems within the Air & Naval Sonar Systems group. Students gain hands-on experience in software design, implementation, testing, and documentation under the guidance of senior engineers. This position provides exposure to the full software development lifecycle and modern development practices, including object-oriented programming and test-driven development.

In this role you can expect to:

  • Assist in the design, analysis, and implementation of software features to meet system requirements.
  • Develop, maintain, and document software in languages such as C++, C, Java, and Python.
  • Support integration of software with third-party equipment and internal systems, including analyzing interface specifications.
  • Participate in software testing, including unit, integration, and verification tests, and document results under guidance.
  • Prepare technical documentation, such as requirements, design notes, test plans, and reports, following standard templates.
  • Investigate system problem reports, support root cause analysis, and assist in resolving software issues.
  • Maintain the codebase in accordance with coding standards and configuration management practices.
  • Collaborate with team members, share ideas, and present work during design or peer reviews.
  • Support internal customers and contribute to high-level integration and qualification testing.

Qualifications

What You Need to Have to Succeed

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or a related technical/scientific field.
  • Understanding of Software Engineering principles and software development lifecycle.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and root cause analysis skills.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Enthusiastic, motivated, and willing to learn under guidance from senior engineers.

What Makes You Stand Out

  • Experience with programming or scripting languages such as C++, C, Java, or Python.
  • Exposure to object-oriented programming and test-driven development.
  • Familiarity with software testing concepts, verification, and validation.
  • Experience with technical writing and documentation.
  • Knowledge of configuration management and version control tools such as Git.
  • Exposure to integration with third-party equipment or system interfaces.
  • Experience working with or familiarity with AI/ML models.

It is a requirement that General Dynamics Mission Systems–Canada be registered with the Canadian Controlled Goods program and that all of its workforce be security assessed. Additional Information

Compensation 
The expected hourly rate for this position is $24.92 - $33.23. Final compensation will be determined based on your relevant work experience to date. As part of student placement, you will be eligible for quarterly pay increases.
