Johnson County Government has an opening for a County Surveyor. This unique position carries significant responsibility, as they oversee all land transactions involving the division or consolidation of property into separate parcels. The Surveyor reviews and signs plats for approval and recording with the Registrar of Deeds. They also serve as the County’s professional authority on surveying matters and may act as an expert witness in legal proceedings involving surveying issues for both the local County and Cities.

Job Description

This role’s essential duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Setting and maintaining the Section Line and Quarter Section Line Network countywide; maintaining the official Road Record of the county; responsible for surveys of the county's borders; responsible for reviewing surveys and plats to determine compliance with State minimum requirements; signs all plats submitted to the Register of Deeds for recording.
  • Serves as Survey Party Chief/Field Supervisor; prepares and plans for routine surveys by researching government records, assigning jobs to surveying crew, and determining equipment and supplies needed; performs topographic, construction, right of way, and as built surveys; performs differential and trigonometric leveling; keeps detailed field notes and sketches; locates and records existing monuments; operates and maintains surveys instruments' including calibration testing
  • Serves as Chief Cartographer for the county by providing accurate situs addressing; collects, maintains, and preserves new and historic records of right-of-way data and surveying information for use by the surveying community, internal and external stakeholders.

Job Requirements

Minimum Job Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree in Surveying or Engineering.
  • Eight (8) years of surveying experience.

Preferred Job Qualifications:

  • Three (3) years of supervisory experience.
  • Successful completion of the Professional Surveyors Exam, per Kansas Statues Chapter 74, Article 70, Section 22, K.S.A. 74-7022); specifically, 74-7022 (A) and (B) according to the State Board of Technical Professionals (KSBTP).
