Position Description:

The University of Louisville School of Dentistry prepares students for a career in dentistry. Programs are available at the DMD level in general dentistry and at the master's level in endodontics, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, and prosthodontics. Dental Clinic Support employees are integral to that preparation, providing support to students across all preclinical and clinical activities, including but not limited to instrument supply, dispensary, sterilization, and simulation. In their first two years of study, students learn in a traditional classroom setting supplemented by simulation and lab experience. During their third and fourth years, students transition to providing patient care in a clinical setting. Dental Clinic Support staff directly support students as they progress toward completion of their pre-clinical and clinical requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare all cassettes for students to complete their work in the simulation clinic/labs or the south lab. Provide all dental materials needed for students to complete their work in the simulation clinic/labs or the south lab.

  • Check in and out instruments and supplies for students in the simulation clinic/labs or the south lab.

  • Prep, pack, and transport instruments for next use.

  • Instruct students on how to prepare lab cases for presentations to instructors or Quality Assurance. Facilitate communication of Quality Assurance issues between students and faculty.

  • Provide oversight of cases sent to the lab ensuring that the report is accurate and complete. Communicate with the external labs to ensure the timely and accurate return of cases.

  • Provide orientation to the labs for the rising juniors, including instruction on instrument and supply selection, safe use of lab equipment, and infection control.

  • Ensure that the equipment is working properly and arrange for repair when appropriate.

  • Clean lab equipment and arrange disposal of toxic chemical waste.

  • Monitor case progress in Pros Tracking and update faculty or students as needed. Process and record lab invoices, equipment issues, and maintenance in the Microsoft Access database. Provide administrative support to faculty as appropriate, including preparing instruments and supplies for lab-based instruction.

  • Develop and maintain a dental lab calendar for student use. 

  • Restock supplies as needed.

  • Prepare equipment and supplies for the students to take their mock board exams, competencies, and licensure exams

  • Provide coverage in other areas when appropriate.

  • Other duties as assigned.
