Department Overview

Neighborhood Strategies is part of NYCEDC’s Planning Division and, together with the Land Use and Transportation Departments, works to promote robust, inclusive growth in the city’s neighborhoods and waterfronts.  The Planning Division advances major projects that engage communities in planning for their future; helps build vibrant, inclusive neighborhoods; directs strategic infrastructure investments; leverages the City’s public assets; strengthens transportation systems; and promotes public access, economic opportunity, and climate resilience.

The Neighborhood Strategies department leads complex, multidisciplinary neighborhood planning efforts across the five boroughs, using the policy tools and resources of NYCEDC divisions and New York City agencies.  The team plans for large-scale public infrastructure investment and public-private development; conducts spatial analyses to identify and deepen understanding of neighborhood vulnerabilities and opportunities; and shapes and leads public engagement and outreach to meaningfully engage communities and stakeholders in inclusive planning. The team is made up of dedicated public servants with a passion for New York City and its people and neighborhoods.

Neighborhood Strategies’ notable current work includes the Together for Kingsbridge Vision Plan, which will guide redevelopment of the nation’s largest historic armory; Hunts Point Forward, a community-driven neighborhood plan for Hunts Point in the South Bronx; the Staten Island North Shore Action Plan, a generational investment to create a vibrant, mixed-use waterfront in the borough’s urban center; an innovative climate resilience master plan for flood protection and open space in Lower Manhattan; planning a state-of-the-art life sciences and public education campus in Kips Bay, Manhattan; and a revitalized public realm around the Broadway Junction transit hub in East New York, Brooklyn.

Ideal Candidate Profile:

The ideal candidate for the Neighborhood Strategies department is a thoughtful and collaborative planner who is passionate about building more equitable, inclusive, and resilient neighborhoods. You likely have experience leading or contributing to complex planning efforts that bring together city agencies, communities, and private partners to reimagine urban spaces and shape public investment.

You are comfortable managing multidisciplinary teams and workplans, coordinating across stakeholders, and navigating competing interests with diplomacy and strategic problem-solving. You are a clear and compelling communicator—whether in a public meeting, written brief, or visual presentation, and you prioritize equitable, accessible, and inclusive community engagement.

If you are someone who thrives on cross-sector collaboration, believes in the power of communities to shape their future, and is driven to create long-lasting impact in New York City’s neighborhoods, this team may be the right fit for you.
