Location:Â Remote locations near Grande Prairie, ABÂ
Work Environment: Remote forestry sites with rugged terrain and variable weather conditions. Long outdoor workdays require stamina and resilience. Strong emphasis on teamwork, respect, and adherence to safety protocols. Â
Position is in a remote silviculture camp. Employees sleep in their own accommodations (generally tents). Nutritious and delicious hot meals are provided on workdays.  Common areas and shower facilities are provided.  Work rotations vary – generally four days on, one day off.  Approximately May 1 – July 31st with possible extension.Â
 Pay: Based on qualifications and experience. Starting at $270 per day.  Â
Job Description
WHATS THE JOB?
The Tree Assessor plays a critical role in maintaining high standards of tree planting quality. This position ensures that every planting site meets or exceeds client specifications through systematic quality checks and accurate documentation. Responsibilities include tracking quality data by planter, block, and operating area, and delivering clear, timely reports. Success in this role requires meeting daily plot targets, upholding safety protocols, and demonstrating attention to detail, organizational ability, and a strong commitment to operational safety.Â
Quality OversightÂ
- Ensure work meets or exceeds client, contract, and company quality standardsÂ
- Act as a consistent and credible quality authority in the fieldÂ
- Reinforce the link between quality, productivity, and safetyÂ
Field Assessments & AuditsÂ
- Conduct regular field quality checks and audits according to client requirements and map appropriately. Â
- Meet or exceed the required number of plots per day and ensure systematic sampling methods are followed. Â
- Verify compliance with prescriptions, maps, specs, and planting standards (or equivalent)Â
- Identify deficiencies, trends, and recurring quality issuesÂ
- Provide clear, timely feedback to supervisors and crewsÂ
Stock Handling & CareÂ
- Verify proper handling, transport, storage, and protection of stock/seedlingsÂ
- Ensure stock is maintained within required temperature, moisture, and handling standardsÂ
- Monitor cache setup, handling practices, and daily stock managementÂ
- Support corrective actions related to stock damage, loss, or improper handlingÂ
Coaching & TrainingÂ
- Coach crews on quality expectations and best practicesÂ
- Support onboarding and refresher training related to quality and stock handlingÂ
- Reinforce correct techniques through observation and hands-on feedbackÂ
Documentation & ReportingÂ
- Accurately document quality assessments, findings, and corrective actionsÂ
- Track quality metrics and trendsÂ
- Prepare clear, professional reports for operations and client.Â
- Ensure quality data is complete, timely, and defensibleÂ
Corrective Actions & Follow-UpÂ
- Work with supervisors to develop and implement corrective action plansÂ
- Verify corrective actions are completed and effectiveÂ
- Escalate persistent or systemic quality issues as requiredÂ
Collaboration & Client SupportÂ
- Support client inspections, audits, and site visitsÂ
- Communicate professionally regarding quality findingsÂ
- Work closely with Operations, Safety, and Management teamsÂ
- Represent company quality standards in a solutions-focused mannerÂ
Safety Leadership Â
- Perform daily Field Level Hazard Assessments (FLHA) and ensure corrective actions are implemented immediately. Â
- Ensure all required PPE is worn and in good condition; replace as needed. Â
- Participate in safety meetings and emergency preparedness drills. Â
- Report hazards, incidents, and near misses promptly according to company policy. Â
Qualifications
WHAT'S THE JOB?
- Experience in forestry operations, tree planting, or quality assessment is an asset.Â
- Valid First Aid Certification (mandatory).Â
- Strong organizational and communication skills.Â
- Ability to work and live in remote outdoor environments and variable weather conditions.Â
- Physically fit and able to conduct field assessments in rugged terrain.Â
- Familiarity with GPS and data collection tools for plot sampling and reporting.Â
- Valid driver’s license with a clean abstract (required if driving duties are assigned); ability to operate ATVs safely with proper certification.Â
