The role:

SoFi is hiring an experienced Home Equity Underwriter to support a growing lending portfolio. This is a true full-file underwriting role with end-to-end ownership of credit, income, assets, collateral, conditions, and final underwriting decisions. The underwriter will partner closely with processors to move loans efficiently from review through clear-to-close while maintaining strong quality, compliance, and risk discipline.

This role is best suited for an underwriter who is comfortable exercising independent credit judgment in a manual or semi-manual environment and owning the entire file—not just one segment of the process.

What you’ll do:

  • Underwrite and decision Home Equity loan files in accordance with SoFi policies and applicable investor and regulatory guidelines.

  • Perform full credit risk analysis, including borrower creditworthiness, income stability, assets, and collateral.

  • Review and analyze credit reports, income and asset documentation, tax returns, appraisals, title reports, and other loan documentation.

  • Apply independent credit judgment in a manual or semi-manual underwriting environment.

  • Independently evaluate and clear underwriting conditions to maintain pipeline momentum.

  • Analyze self-employed borrower income, including Schedule C, K-1s, partnerships, corporate returns, and business tax returns.

  • Identify potential risk, fraud, or documentation concerns and escalate appropriately.

  • Collaborate closely with loan processors to resolve documentation gaps and move loans toward closing.

  • Make clear, well-documented, and defensible approval, suspension, or decline decisions.

  • Meet established production, turn-time, quality, accuracy, and compliance expectations.

What you’ll need:

  • Minimum 2 years of recent conventional mortgage underwriting experience with direct decision-making authority.

  • Demonstrated full-file underwriting ownership across credit, income, assets, collateral, conditions, and final decisions.

  • Direct appraisal and title review experience.

  • Strong experience analyzing self-employed income and complex borrower scenarios.

  • Ability to independently evaluate and clear underwriting conditions.

  • Strong understanding of credit policy, underwriting guidelines, collateral evaluation, and risk assessment.

  • Experience working in a compliance-driven, production-oriented environment with accountability for quality and turn times.

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, particularly when partnering with processors.

  • Ability to work standard business hours aligned with Central Time.

  • Ability to work from the Frisco, Texas office 1–2 days per week.

Nice to have:

  • Home Equity, HELOC, or second-lien underwriting experience.

  • Manual or semi-manual underwriting experience.

  • Experience with complex borrower, collateral, or lien-position scenarios.

  • High-volume production underwriting experience.

  • DU/LP experience as supporting conventional underwriting exposure.

  • CHUMS, SAR, or VA credit authority.
