Summary

The Housing Search Worker assists asylum seekers and Refugee Claimants in their search for emergency or transitional housing in Metro Vancouver. Reporting to: Manager, BC SAFE HAVEN, Settlement Orientation Service (SOS) program.

How You Will Make a Difference

• Provides general information on the Metro Vancouver rental market through group orientation sessions or one-to-one appointments.  
• Where possible identifies emergency, transitional, or longer-term housing options.  
• Maintains a current listing of shelters, emergency and transitional housing for finding housing options (list of websites, contacts, etc.).  
• Liaises with emergency and transitional housings, landlords and building managers to facilitate opportunities for housing options.  
• Accompany clients to check into an emergency or transitional shelter as needed or arrange for a volunteer to accompany the client. May occasionally accompany clients to support with permanent housing. 
• Registers clients for BC CHARMS as appropriate  
• Provides administrative support related to rental information such as applications to BC Housing.  
• Enters client data and service interventions into centralized database as client service occurs.   
• Organizes and facilitates housing orientation workshops in groups or 1:1 
• Referrals to settlement workers and other agencies as appropriate.  
• Performs other related duties as assigned  

What You Bring

• Diploma in social services or other related field and Minimum of one (1) year recent, related experience in settlement services, OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. 

• Demonstrated effective communication in both written and oral English. Second language is preferred. 

• Demonstrated ability to work efficiently under pressure and time constraints and to deal with high-need clients and urgent situations. 

• Demonstrated cultural competency and commitment to working effectively with diverse populations. 

• Possession of and the ability to maintain a clear provincial Criminal Record Check.

• Hiring Salary: $25.36- $35.54 per hour
