About this role

Who we are looking for

State Street is seeking a Vice President, Legal Knowledge Engineering to capture, structure, and operationalize institutional expertise in support of consistent, scalable, and technology-enabled service delivery across the Legal Department and its adjacent functions.

Working closely with legal, regulatory, governance, policy, sustainability, corporate security, and operational subject matter experts, this role will document decision frameworks, risk tolerances, operating procedures, escalation criteria, and domain expertise, and transform them into structured knowledge assets and business requirements that can be embedded within workflows, processes, automation solutions, and AI-enabled tools.

The successful candidate will help preserve institutional knowledge, improve consistency and scalability of service delivery, and establish the knowledge foundations required to support the Department's evolving operating model and adoption of emerging technologies.

This role is ideal for an individual who excels at understanding how experienced professionals make decisions and translating that expertise into structured, reusable guidance that can be consistently applied across people, processes, and technology solutions.

What you will be responsible for

Knowledge Engineering

  • Partner with subject matter experts across Legal, Regulatory Relations, Public Policy, Sustainability, Corporate Secretary, Corporate Security, and related functions to capture and document decision-making frameworks, risk tolerances, operating procedures, escalation criteria, and business rules.
  • Translate complex domain expertise into structured, repeatable guidance that can be consistently applied across processes, workflows, and service delivery activities.
  • Develop and maintain decision trees, knowledge models, issue taxonomies, precedent repositories, playbooks, guidance libraries, and other reusable knowledge assets.
  • Establish standards and methodologies for documenting expertise in a manner that promotes consistency, scalability, knowledge reuse, and institutional resilience.
  • Identify critical institutional knowledge and ensure it is captured, maintained, and preserved independent of individual contributors.
  • Create and maintain documentation that clearly articulates decision points, escalation pathways, governance requirements, and risk-based operating practices.

Process Architecture & Service Design

  • Analyze business processes and service delivery activities to identify opportunities for standardization, simplification, scalability, and operational improvement.
  • Decompose complex work into discrete activities, decision points, escalation paths, business rules, and desired outcomes.
  • Design future-state workflows that effectively integrate subject matter experts, business stakeholders, operational teams, and technology solutions.
  • Develop operating procedures, service models, process maps, and decision frameworks that support efficient and scalable execution.
  • Support strategic initiatives focused on improving productivity, quality, consistency, transparency, and stakeholder experience.

AI & Technology Enablement

  • Translate policies, procedures, playbooks, and decision frameworks into structured requirements suitable for automation and AI-enabled solutions.
  • Document business requirements, decision logic, inputs, outputs, escalation criteria, testing scenarios, and acceptance criteria.
  • Partner with technology teams to ensure institutional expertise is accurately represented within workflows, automation capabilities, knowledge systems, and AI-enabled tools.
  • Develop and maintain the knowledge assets required to support AI-assisted ways of working and future technology-enabled operating models.
  • Establish quality standards and testing methodologies to evaluate the consistency, reliability, and appropriateness of technology-generated outputs.
  • Support pilot programs, workflow redesign initiatives, and technology implementations by providing the knowledge structures and business requirements required for successful adoption.

Education & Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • 7+ years of experience in Knowledge Management, Legal Operations, Business Process Management, Operational Excellence, Legal Innovation, Business Analysis, Service Design, Enterprise Transformation, or a related discipline.
  • Experience working directly with subject matter experts to document and operationalize complex expertise.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate professional judgment, policies, procedures, and specialized domain knowledge into structured frameworks, workflows, business rules, and operational requirements.
  • Experience decomposing complex work into decision logic, escalation pathways, business rules, testing scenarios, and repeatable operating models.
  • Experience designing business processes, service delivery models, workflows, or operating procedures.
  • Strong facilitation, interviewing, documentation, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively bridge business, operational, and technology teams.
