ABOUT THE JOB
The ACLU seeks applicants for the full-time position of Manager, Facilities ConstructionĀ in theĀ Business Operations and Support Services (BOSS) Department of the ACLUās National office in Washington, D.C. This is aĀ hybrid roleĀ that has minimum in-office requirements of three (3) days per week or twelveĀ (12) days per month. This is a two-year term-limited position.
The Business Operations and Support Services department, in the office of the Chief Operating Officer, works to enable organizational and operational effectiveness by partnering with ACLU staff across the enterprise to develop the business solutions, training, support, physical space planning, and evaluation resources needed to maximize resources and achieve the organizationās strategic goals.Ā Ā
WHAT YOU'LL DOĀ
Reporting to the Director of Facilities, the Manager, Facilities Construction willĀ leadĀ renovation and construction projects of the ACLUās owned building in Washington,Ā DCĀ and the National Headquarters in New York City.Ā Ā The Manager, Facilities Construction will lead and manage other design and construction projects in the ACLUās satellite offices to support the organizationās needs for effective workplace operations. The Manager, Facilities Construction will also assistĀ inĀ establishingĀ the aesthetic representation of the ACLUās mission and vision and interpreting/communicating this between the organization and its consultants.Ā Ā This position will be based out of the Washington, DC office.Ā This is a 2-yearĀ term position.Ā
YOUR DAY TO DAY
- Manage and oversee renovation and construction projectsĀ in ACLUĀ NationalĀ facilities.Ā
- Coordinate withĀ SeniorĀ ACLU staff inĀ establishingĀ a program andĀ interface withĀ architects toĀ determineĀ futureĀ optimalĀ space usageĀ design.Ā
- Participate in confidential conversationsĀ with Senior StaffĀ around staffing levels,Ā changes toĀ in-office work policy andĀ renovation focused funding drives.Ā
- Manage selection of vendors associated with design and construction projects.Ā Including preparation and evaluation of requests for proposals for consultants, general contractors, and subcontractors.Ā
- Coordinate the activities of consultants, including Architects, Engineers, and Expeditors to ensure projects are programmed, designed,Ā permittedĀ and bid appropriatelyĀ
- Coordinate the activities of construction managers and contractors to ensure that projects are bid,Ā contractedĀ and delivered as designed, on schedule and on budgetĀ
- Develop,Ā estimateĀ and track project budgets, takingĀ appropriate actionĀ when necessary to ensure adherence to budgetary limitations as well as to ensure projects stay on budgetĀ
- AssistĀ legalĀ team in negotiating contracts and setting business terms with vendors and consultants for such contracts.Ā Ā Ā
- Administrate all Contracts, Purchase Orders, Change Orders, Requisitions and PaymentsĀ
- Develop andĀ maintainĀ project status reports providing management and leadership with project status and finance reports.Ā
- Act as a liaison between staff, leadership,Ā vendorsĀ and other project stakeholders.Ā
- Develop and manage communication and change management strategies.Ā
- Manage project risks andĀ determineĀ solutions and mitigation strategies.Ā
- Willingness to travel, as needed.Ā

- DemonstratedĀ experience inĀ design and constructionĀ projectĀ management.Ā
- Thorough understanding of workplace operations and effective workplace design.Ā
- Knowledge of best practices in change management andĀ project management and ability to communicate with staff of all levels.Ā Ā
- Experience with small and medium scale projects in large scale buildings.Ā
- Experience working in a nonprofit environment preferred.Ā
- Experience managingĀ constructionĀ projects in an occupied space.Ā
- Experience managing permitting and building compliance.Ā
- Strong construction project management skills.Ā Ā
- Problem solving skills, decision-making ability, and the ability to take initiative required.Ā
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and act within established policies and procedures.Ā
- Strong skills navigating a complex organizational structure.Ā
- Strong presentation and communication skills.Ā
- Ability to solve problems and make independent decisions of crucial consequence, while considering organizational guidelines and strict confidentiality.Ā

- Flexibility to work on-site additional days as necessitated by active project schedules and operational demands
