Position Summary
The Medical Director of Acute Rehabilitation at Central Maine Medical Center provides strategic, clinical, and operational leadership for the inpatient rehabilitation program. This physician leader ensures high-quality, patient-centered care while driving program growth, regulatory compliance, and superior functional outcomes in alignment with Prime Healthcare’s mission.
Clinical Schedule & Expectations
- Medical Director will maintain an active clinical role within the Acute Rehabilitation Unit
- Expected to provide on-site clinical coverage approximately 3 weeks per month, unless on approved vacation
- One week per month designated for administrative responsibilities, program development, and leadership activities
- Participates in call coverage as required by the program

Responsibilities
- Provide medical leadership and oversight of the Acute Rehabilitation Unit (ARU)
- Direct patient care activities including admissions, continued stays, and discharge planning in accordance with IRF criteria
- Lead interdisciplinary team conferences to coordinate comprehensive rehabilitation care
- Develop and implement clinical protocols, pathways, and quality improvement initiatives
- Ensure compliance with Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), The Joint Commission, and all applicable regulations
- Collaborate with hospital leadership to drive program growth and operational efficiency
- Monitor and improve key metrics such as length of stay, functional outcomes, and readmission rates
- Oversee utilization management, documentation accuracy, and medical necessity reviews
- Recruit, mentor, and supervise rehabilitation physicians and advanced practice providers
Qualifications
- MD or DO degree from an accredited institution
- Board Certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) preferred
- Active, unrestricted Maine medical license (or ability to obtain)
- Minimum 3–5 years of inpatient rehabilitation experience
- Prior leadership experience strongly preferred
- Working knowledge of IRF-PAI, CMS guidelines, and interdisciplinary rehab models
