About the Position
The Unit Manager is responsible for overseeing all administrative, technical, and clinicalÂ
functions within their unit on a 24/7 basis, ensuring seamless and effective careÂ
delivery. This leadership role focuses on enhancing patient and team satisfactionÂ
through strategic management, program development, and adherence to highÂ
standards of care. The Unit Manager designs and implements educational programs,Â
establishes policies and goals, engages in proactive problem-solving, and providesÂ
comprehensive fiscal oversight. The patient population served within the unit variesÂ
based on its specialty and may include individuals with acute and chronic medicalÂ
conditions, post-surgical recovery needs, and complex comorbidities requiringÂ
multidisciplinary care. Patients may range in age, acuity, and complexity, necessitatingÂ
a patient-centered approach to ensure optimal outcomes and high-quality care tailoredÂ
to their specific needs. This role requires a mature, adaptable leader capable ofÂ
navigating the complexities of a rapidly evolving healthcare environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Delegates or oversees patient assignments based on care needs, consideringÂ
patient acuity, age, cultural practices, emotional needs, physical or cognitiveÂ
limitations, language barriers, and assessment complexity to ensure optimal careÂ
alignment.
• Ensures patient care assignments align with patient acuity and staff competencies,Â
guiding charge nurses in assignment decisions for effective care delivery.
• Monitors and evaluates the quality and quantity of nursing care, identifying areas forÂ
improvement.
• Demonstrates a thorough understanding of nursing and hospital policies,Â
procedures, and standards.
• Responds to clinical situations with prompt evaluation and support.
• Identifies and communicates key factors impacting care quality, patient satisfaction,Â
and organizational mission.
• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships and communication withinÂ
the team.
• Develops and implements staff retention strategies to foster a stable workforce.
• Manages the hiring process, selecting candidates committed to the organization’sÂ
culture and service standards.
• In partnership with the NERD Department, oversees orientation, ongoing education,
and staff evaluations to support professional growth.
• Cultivates a culture of accountability and personal responsibility, ensuring staff areÂ
held to high standards.
• Regularly assesses staff competency, providing feedback and support forÂ
performance improvement.
• Initiates corrective actions as necessary, including terminations when required.
• Adapts work hours to meet the demands of the position.
• Collaborates with the Director to determine staffing needs and create a staffing planÂ
responsive to patient acuity and care hours.
• Works with the Director to prepare the annual operating and capital budgets,Â
maintaining fiscal responsibility.
• Coordinates with other disciplines to meet discharge needs.
• Leads departmental and hospital quality initiatives, analyzing data and using it toÂ
drive performance improvement across patient care, safety, and staff development.

Education and ExperienceÂ
• Graduation from an accredited nursing program.
• Bachelor’s degree required, with master’s degree preferred.Â
• Certification in appropriate field encouraged.
• Demonstrated leadership and social emotional intelligence skills required.
• 5 years nursing experience with two being in a charge nurse or supervisory roleÂ
preferred.Â

• Licensure in the State of Indiana as a Registered Nurse (RN)
• BLS
• ACLS.
