Position Summary:

The pharmacy manager - operations assists the Director of Pharmacy in managing and coordinating, through supervisory personnel, all aspects of pharmacy operations, including managing and mentoring staff, developing and enforcing policies and procedures, assisting with project management, preparing and maintaining accreditation, and accounting for the pharmacy’s overall financial results. As a key leader within the hospital, the manager of operations oversees all drug distribution and usage in the facility while collaborating with customers, hospital staff, medical staff, and hospital administration.

 

The manager of operations is also responsible for leading clinical pharmacy programs and services. The manager of operations serves as a clinical resource for the provision of pharmaceutical care and clinical pharmacy services; coordinates all activities related to the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee and for formulary management; builds effective relationships with other healthcare professionals and departments within the hospital and system; and promotes clinically rational drug therapy and sound pharmaceutical care through the development of new (or expansion of existing) clinical pharmacy programs, drug therapy policies, and other programs.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for overseeing the daily operation of the pharmacy.
  • Assumes the responsibilities of the Director of Pharmacy in their absence.
  • Establishes master staffing plan for pharmacists and directs the Supervising Hospital Pharmacists in its implementation.
  • Monitors the day-to-day operation of all pharmacy through detailed reporting systems.
  • Responsible for coordinating and informing the Director of Pharmacy and staff of all pertinent activities, issues, and expectations.
  • Assists the Director in developing operational systems and procedures that are in accordance with Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Hospitals and State Hospital Codes.
  • Assists the Director in the selection of drug products and the development of protocols.
  • Supervises the inventory control, storage, and preparation of unit dosage procedures.
  • Assists in the financial management of the pharmacy department.
  • Fulfills departmental personnel management responsibilities including employee selection, counseling, and periodic performance evaluations.
  • Maintains outstanding skills as a clinical pharmacy practitioner.
  • Coordinates and supervises all activities involving clinical pharmacists.
  • Provides oversight for scheduling of clinical pharmacists. Assures clinical pharmacists coordinate and develop regular in-service training programs for pharmacy staff and other health care professionals.
  • Responsible for monitoring, developing, and evaluating clinical activities provided by all pharmacy staff with an emphasis on pharmaceutical care concepts.
  • May use computer applications or other automated systems such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail, and database software in performing work assignments.
  • Oversees and evaluates the clinical intervention program data.
  • Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards. Completes required education assignments annually. Works toward achieving goals and objectives, and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:          

Completion of an ASHP accredited residency

 

Minimum Experience:         

Five (5+) years of experience as a hospital pharmacist, one (1) of which must have been at the supervisory level

 

Licensure Requirement:      

Valid license and current registration as a pharmacist issued by the state of Tennessee
