About this role

Overview

The Network Engineer is responsible for end‑to‑end monitoring, observability, network performance management, logging, alerting, synthetic testing, and operational reliability of VA product environments for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Office of Information and Technology (OIT), Product Delivery Services (PDS), Benefits and Memorials (BAM), Memorial and Benefit Services (MBS) deliver secure, reliable, and effective Information Technology (IT) solutions that support the Department’s mission.

Responsibilities

  • Establish baselines, maintain dashboards, implement proactive alerting, perform incident triage, support SRE practices, and ensure compliance with service level targets across all cloud and on‑prem environments
  • Establish performance, availability, and capacity baselines for all VA product environments.
  • Implement real‑time and proactive monitoring dashboards providing visibility into product health and performance.
  • Work with VA to instrument significant data paths and business transactions for monitoring and optimization.
  • Implement monitoring plugins, agents, and synthetic tests to track system, network, application, and database behaviors.
  • Perform trend analysis, periodic reviews, and forecasting of system performance and resource utilization.
  • Identify upstream/downstream performance impacts based on changes to functionality or user behavior.
  • Provide 24x7x365 monitoring and incident response for VA environments.
  • Investigate attempted or successful intrusions, isolate systems, preserve forensic evidence, and provide Incident Reports.

Qualifications

Required:

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in computer science or an IT-related degree with 7-10 years' experience
  • Expertise in IT monitoring tools, cloud service provider monitoring, logging platforms, and observability frameworks.
  • Experience instrumenting systems, networks, applications, and databases for metrics and log collection.
  • Strong knowledge of alerting systems, synthetic monitoring, telemetry pipelines, and performance baselines.
  • Familiarity with SRE principles (fault tolerance, automated monitoring, resilience engineering).
  • Experience with distributed systems, microservices architectures, and cloud-based environments (VAEC).
