Summary

Provide lymphedema occupational therapy to patients, including assessments, development of individualized treatment plans, program planning, implementation, and related documentation and communication to increase the patients’ functional independence. This position includes but is not limited to interventions such as manual lymphatic drainage, compression therapy, and patient education on self-management techniques.

Major Job Functions

The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job.  The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below.  In addition, specific functions may change from time to time:

  • Assessment & Treatment Planning: Conduct comprehensive evaluations to determine the severity of lymphedema and develop individualized treatment plans

  • Therapeutic Interventions: Apply advanced techniques such as manual lymph drainage, compression therapy (bandages, garments, pneumatic pumps), and decongestive exercises to reduce swelling and improve lymphatic flow

  • Patient Education: Teach self-care techniques, skin care, and home exercise programs to empower patients in managing their condition

  • Collaboration: Work closely with physicians, nurses, occupational therapists, and other healthcare providers in a multidisciplinary approach 

  • Documentation & Compliance: Maintain accurate medical records meeting regulatory and accreditation standards (e.g., JCAHO)

  • Equipment Management: Oversee and maintain lymphedema-related equipment and supplies 

  • Team Leadership: Supervise and mentor support staff, manage therapy sessions, and ensure adherence to treatment protocols 

  • Assesses the needs of the patient using evaluation tools and clinical observations

  • Develops treatment plans, including goals, and methods to achieve identified goals

  • Provides goal directed treatment consistent with current OT practice standards and/or ensures that OTAs deliver goal-directed services appropriately

  • Selects and uses learning strategies to share occupational therapy treatment choices and outcomes with patients, family, care team and consumers

  • Effectively uses available information sources to report therapy activities and patient performances

  • Demonstrates expanding mastery of clinical concepts and techniques to match the needs of patient care assignments and/or program development

  • Promotes growth and development while evaluating performance and maintaining standards of assigned individuals

  • Complies with department and institutional policies and procedures and assists with organizational improvement projects

  • Authorized to have access to medications within their scope of practice

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:

Education and Formal Training

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited academic institution
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Current licensure as an Occupational Therapist in the state of North Carolina
  • Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT) certification or equivalent clinical experience in lymphedema evaluation and treatment required
  • LANA certification or eligibility to obtain LANA certification

Work Experience

  • 3 years of experience managing outpatient oncology related lymphedema including ordering, measuring, and fitting garments for related edema reduction. 
  • 3 years of experience collaborating with multiple external vendors for obtaining garments for edema reduction. Including knowledge of required documentation and insurance authorization requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking the English language

  • Professional competency as a general practitioner of OT as defined by certification and licensure

  • Ability to select age appropriate functional goals and treatment techniques for pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients

  • Interpersonal skills that promote cooperative patient and peer behavior

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to communicate orally, read, write, hear, and visually assess patient status

  • Ability to utilize proper body mechanics when examining or delivering care

  • Ability to transfer and transport patients of various body weight and composition

  • Ability to stand, bend, stoop, lift, turn, twist, sit and walk frequently

  • Ability to demonstrate proper use of and manipulate equipment
