Job Description

OT/IT LEAD

Fleet Renewal

Victoria

The Opportunity

In order to address the challenges brought on by constrained system capacity, aging major assets, and environmental sustainability, BC Ferries has recently launched a new Fleet Renewal organization.  This team will deliver a large number of new major and minor vessels to the fleet in the near term, as well as significant builds and upgrades to shore-based infrastructure and facilities.  These projects together form the largest capital investment in the company’s history.

Working as part of the Fleet Renewal technical team and reporting through its technical leadership structure, the OT/IT Lead contributes to Fleet Renewal’s shipbuilding and infrastructure project requirements, specifications, and designs. The role oversees the design and integration of operational technology systems on new BC Ferries vessels, including automation, data management, cyber security, and integration of these capabilities into the overall vessel design.

As a subject matter expert, the OT/IT Lead provides professional and technical guidance to internal project teams, shipyards, suppliers, and site teams on planning, design, regulatory requirements, engineering principles, acceptance testing, and requirements management. The role serves as the primary liaison between Fleet Renewal and the BC Ferries IT Division, aligning OT/IT and  business capabilities with Fleet Renewal requirements and corporate standards, while supporting communication and issue resolution where architecture, cyber risk management, and adoption of new digital technologies intersect with vessel and infrastructure project delivery. The role has accountability for OT/IT implementation, architecture decisions, and cybersecurity controls. The IT governance remains with the appropriate IT Division owners.

The OT/IT Lead must occasionally travel and work outside the local geographic area, including internationally, and onboard ships at sea.

Reporting to the Director, Technical & Design, this role is integral to the achievement of company objectives, and you contribute value through key areas of oversight such as:

  • Provides senior technical expertise and guidance across information technology (IT), operational technology (OT) systems, architecture, cyber security, and related domains, to stakeholders, project teams, shipyards, contractors, and vendors to support decision-making and project delivery;
  • Leads or contributes to planning, design, implementation, integration, testing, and optimization of complex technology solutions, projects, and initiatives;
  • Translate business and operational needs into clear requirements, ensuring technology solutions align with organizational objectives, corporate standards, user needs, and operational priorities;
  • Acts as a liaison between business, operational, and technology stakeholders to align solutions with organizational requirements, standards, and strategic priorities;
  • Identifies, analyses, and resolves complex technical issues, risks, recommending solutions and improvements informed by emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices to enhance reliability, efficiency, security, performance, and business alignment;
  • Supports governance, compliance, risk management, cyber security, and lifecycle asset management activities associated with technology systems, services, and assets;
  • Provides mentorship, technical guidance, and knowledge sharing to team members and stakeholders, contributing to the development of organizational capability and technical excellence.

What you bring to the team
