Akron General’s Cardiovascular Intervention Care Unit (CVICU) offers medical attention for various conditions and diagnoses, including acute myocardial infarctions, cardiogenic shock, severe coronary artery disease and other conditions. As PCNA, you play an integral role in ensuring patients continue receiving the best treatment possible. You will find a welcoming and hands-on environment where caregivers encourage education, mutual support and teamwork. Each day, you have numerous opportunities to make a difference in your community and gain a wide variety of skills you can use in advanced positions or other departments. 

A caregiver in this position works days from 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. including every other weekend and 3 holidays per year.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Prepare units, patient rooms and patient beds for receiving patient admission, returning surgical patients, transfers or emergencies. 
  • Provide and document assigned care, such as bathing, changing/refreshing bed linens, dressing/undressing, feeding, etc.  
  • Take and document the patient's temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, weight and height. 
  • Perform treatment procedures, such as venous blood draws, enemas, application of ice and heat packs, non-sterile compresses, skin preps, setting up oxygen equipment, bed scale weights, setting up overhead trapeze and Buck’s traction and removing urinary Foley Catheters. 
  • Assist with pre-operative and post-operative care, such as turning and positioning patients with proper body mechanics, applying/utilizing special equipment and ambulating the patient as directed in a safe, prescribed manner. 
  • Assist and accompany patients during admission, transfer and discharge. 
  • Perform hourly safety rounds, anticipate patient needs and respond to patient call lights promptly. 
  • Collect, properly label and transport specimens to proper area. 
  • Document patient care in the electronic medical record.  
  • Assist in keeping patient rooms in order, report equipment that is out of order, clean equipment and inventory and distribute unit linen and supplies. 
  • Complete ongoing competency requirements, education programs and mandatory training to maintain certification and/or licensure.  

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • High School Diploma or GED 
  • Successful completion of Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within new hire period
  • Prior job or educational experience providing basic computer knowledge and skills 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA)  
  • One year of recent acute care experience OR military experience as a Hospital Corpsman (HM), Combat Medic (68W) or Medical Service Technician (4N0X1)
