About this role

IONATE is a deep tech scale-up building the hardware and software backbone for smart grids. Our mission is to transform power systems – from grids and microgrids to renewables and datacentres – unlocking the massive potential in this under-innovated sector that touches every aspect of our modern lives.

We are now looking for a PCB Development Engineer to join our Power Electronics team. Requiring knowledge and experience in electronics design and manufacturing, you will support the development, design, implementation and testing of electronic circuits and systems, which will ultimately be produced in high volumes.

You’d start by spearheading IONATE’s PCB development environment, components library, and processes, using Altium Designer / Develop / 365 as the primary ECAD tool. Beyond this, you will have the opportunity to work on new and existing PCB designs and progress your career into an electronics design engineer.

This is a unique opportunity to fulfil a key role in bringing IONATE’s in-house electronics development to full maturity, with the ultimate goal of reliable, cost-effective PCB assemblies being produced at scale for our Hybrid Intelligent Transformer.

What you will do:

  • Work with Altium Designer on a daily basis to support the Power Electronics team’s existing and upcoming PCB projects.
  • Create and maintain an IONATE-specific component library which is fit for IPC Class III assembly and volume production.
  • Create and maintain project, schematic and BOM templates, lifecycle processes and workflows, and design guideline documents.
  • Work with PCB assemblers and manufacturers to understand key requirements affecting design-for-assembly and design-for-test.
  • Develop high-reliability PCB assemblies, suitable for high-volume production.
  • Work to clear timescales and collaborate with a cross-functional team to deliver projects on time, with ambitious product targets.
  • Degree in Electrical and Electronics engineering or equivalent.
  • Proven experience in a manufacturing, prototyping or engineering design environment– for example; industrial, motor drives, EV chargers, automotive, aerospace
  • Experience in electronics hardware design, including PCB and power supply design - AC-DC, DC-DC and DC-AC
  • Good understanding of electronic and electrical components and their principles.
  • Experience using Altium Designer and/or SPICE
  • Communication skills enabling you to work with various teams across the globe.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a continuous improvement mindset.
  • A drive to learn new things!

It would be useful to have:

  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment as a technician etc.
  • Experience designing custom PCBs and taking them from concept through to production.
  • Exposure to IPC standards and certifications.
  • PCB rework and/or testing experience.
  • Experience with electronics fit for large scale manufacturing and production.
  • Employee Option Plan: You get equity in IONATE, so as we succeed so do you.
  • Private Medical & Dental Insurance: From day one, we provide you with full, comprehensive private medical and dental cover through Bupa. You also have the option to add any dependents to your cover. Please ask us for more details.
  • Company pension: a flexible, and sustainable pension product to help you plan for your future.
  • Career Development: It’s important to us that you have the opportunity for ongoing professional development and career growth. You will receive an annual budget for professional development and work with your team to set and reach goals every year.
  • Flexible working schedules: You will be based in our modern West London offices and have the flexibility for hybrid work-from-home arrangements. Talk to us at the application process about this.
  • Cycle to Work Scheme: Low carbon travel is important for everyone, so we have in place a cycle scheme to help you purchase a bicycle.
  • Slow travel: We believe in a low carbon future, so if you wish to travel by a lower carbon method – but it takes much longer than flying - we will give you an extra 2 slow travel days per year.
