Procurement Engineer - Contract Manufacturing

Job Description

About the role:

Brooks Automation is a fast-paced technology company that works on the cutting edge of Semiconductor robotics and automation solutions.  As we continue to push the capabilities of robotics inside semiconductor fabs, we are looking for someone who is excited by both technology and manufacturing automation.

The Procurement Engineer – Contract Manufacturing plays a pivotal role in ensuring the reliable, cost‑effective supply of mechanical build‑to‑print components, OEM parts, and commercial items through external manufacturing partners. This role combines strong technical expertise—interpreting mechanical drawings and specifications—with commercial acumen to drive sourcing and purchasing decisions in a fast‑paced CM environment.

Partnering closely with contract manufacturers, engineering, quality, and operations teams, the Procurement Engineer develops and manages localized and regional supply bases to improve cost, reduce lead times, and mitigate supply risk. The role is also actively involved in supplier qualification, value‑engineering initiatives, and continuous improvement efforts to enhance total cost of ownership, quality, and delivery performance across the contract manufacturing network.

Work Location: ONSITE – Pasir Gudang, Johor Bahru.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Sourcing & Procurement

  • Manage end-to-end procurement activities for mechanical build-to-print parts, OEM components, and standard commercial items.

  • Review and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and bill of materials to ensure accurate sourcing and supplier capability alignment.

  • Identify, evaluate, and qualify new suppliers to localize sourcing and reduce reliance on overseas supply.

  • Conduct supplier audits, capability assessments, and cost/lead-time benchmarking.

Cost Management & Negotiation

  • Lead pricing negotiations to achieve competitive cost, favorable commercial terms, and long-term cost reductions.

  • Perform cost breakdown analysis for mechanical components to validate quotes and ensure pricing fairness.

  • Drive continuous cost improvement initiatives through alternate sourcing, value engineering, and supplier productivity programs.

Supplier Relationship & Performance Management

  • Develop strong working relationships with suppliers to ensure on-time delivery, quality performance, and responsiveness to demand changes.

  • Monitor supplier performance (OTD, quality, cost) and work with cross-functional teams on corrective actions when required.

  • Partner with suppliers to secure capacity, reduce lead time, and resolve supply disruptions proactively.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with Engineering, Quality, Production, and Planning teams to support new product introductions and material readiness.

  • Support engineering changes by coordinating technical reviews, re-quotations, supplier alignment, and implementation timelines.

  • Liaise with Production/Planning to ensure materials availability and resolve procurement-related escalations.

  • Any other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Competencies:

  • Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, or related technical field.

  • Minimum 3–5 years of procurement experience in precision machining, mechanical assembly, build-to-print manufacturing, or similar environment.

  • Strong technical understanding of mechanical drawings (GD&T preferred) and machining/metal fabrication processes.

  • Proven negotiation skills with the ability to drive cost reductions and secure competitive supplier terms.

  • Experience in supplier localization and onboarding of new vendors.

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

  • Good communication and stakeholder management skills.

  • Must be willing to travel internationally as required (15-20%)

Desirable Skills:

  • Knowledge of machining cost modelling, tooling, and material cost drivers.

  • Experience with ERP/MRP systems (SAP, Oracle, Netsuite, etc.).

  • Familiarity with ISO/AS quality standards and supplier audit processes.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.

  • Ability to speak Mandarin and/or German language will be an added advantage.
