Job Description

Are you a safety-focused student looking to apply your knowledge in a dynamic corporate environment? Pilot Company is seeking a Safety Intern to join our team in Knoxville, Tennessee, for the summer of 2027. This is a unique opportunity to gain valuable experience in safety management systems, risk reduction, and operational excellence while making a meaningful impact on programs that support the safety and well-being of our team members. Working alongside experienced safety professionals, you'll contribute to initiatives that help create a safer workplace across our organization. 

In this role, you will be an integral part of our Safety team. Your key responsibility will be to support the development and enhancement of safety programs, procedures, and policies designed to reduce risk and improve operational safety. You will collaborate with teams across the business, analyze information gathered through observations and audits, and help create solutions that strengthen Pilot's safety culture. This internship is not only an opportunity to learn the practical application of safety principles but also a chance to grow within a supportive team that is dedicated to developing its people. 

What You’ll Do 

  • Support safety program development: Assist with the creation and enhancement of safety programs, procedures, and policies designed to reduce risk and promote safe operations. 

  • Gather and analyze safety data: Work with inspection, audit, and operational data to identify trends, support leading indicators, and help inform future safety initiatives. 

  • Develop safety solutions: Research workplace risks and hazards, observe operational practices, and help create procedures and recommendations that improve safety performance. 

  • Collaborate with business partners: Work closely with Retail Operations, Energy Operations, and other stakeholders to understand safety needs and support continuous improvement efforts. 

  • Create and deliver presentations: Develop PowerPoint presentations, one-page safety communications, and other materials used to educate and engage operational teams on safety initiatives. 

Qualifications

What We’re Looking For 

  • Education: Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Safety, Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health & Safety, Engineering, or related field. Coursework in safety management systems or risk management is a plus. 

  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in Excel is essential, including the ability to work with data, create graphs, and utilize basic formulas. Experience with PowerPoint and Microsoft Office Suite is required. An eye for document design and creating effective visual communications is highly valued. 

  • Soft Skills: Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders across the organization. Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities are essential. 

  • Qualities: An outgoing personality, a willingness to work independently, and the initiative to take ownership of projects. We value individuals who are driven, reliable, authentic, and welcoming.
