About this role

Based in either of our Auckland CBD, Warkworth or Fleet Street, Devonport office, this role forms a critical part of the Auckland Marine District.

This District’s focus includes Marine Protected Areas and Marine Protected Species alongside a varied range of other moana/marine focused conservation activities.

With wide variety in your tasks, you will collaborate with all workstreams of this District. Your ability to work to critical deadlines while managing multiple tasks will help ensure the success of the entire team.

The position will be focussed on:

  • Community & Advocacy - supporting our seasonal advocacy ranger program, planning and delivering outreach events and engaging with the public regarding Marine Protection.

  • Future Planning – Investigating, designing and planning a volunteer program, enabling our community to support marine advocacy and engagement.

  • Statutory Activities – Advising the Principal Ranger & Operations Manager regarding concessions & permit applications plus monitoring and reporting of existing permissions.

  • Distribution – workings with key partners and stakeholders to ensure advocacy resources are where they need to be, when they need to be there.


Flexibility in your availability will be highly advantageous, as this role requires you to occasionally work weekends and public holidays. Your work will see you regularly travel throughout the Auckland region, so a full NZ driving licence is a requirement.

  • Excellent organisational Skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks at the same time.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to engage effectively with a wide range of individuals and teams and resolve conflicts.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal with experience in report writing.

  • Outstanding time management skills, including the ability to prioritise and maintain a high level of accuracy while working towards fixed deadlines.

  • A broad understanding of conservation legislation and management and how it contributes to New Zealand's future sustainability.

  • Well-developed sense of cultural awareness, particularly in Te Ao Māori.

  • Flexibility to take on other tasks as reasonably required by DOC, with the ability to adapt to changing needs.

  • Commitment to marine sustainability and Te Papa Atawhai’s Kaupapa.

  • Tertiary qualification in conservation or a related area

  • The ability to communicate in multiple languages, with proficiency in Mandarin, Cantonese and Te Reo Māori being highly desirable.

  • A full NZ Driving Licence

Salary: $65,590 to $76,589 depending on skills and experience.
