The Residency Writing Coach provides one-on-one virtual coaching sessions for HMSOM students and assists students with generating effective personal statements for applications to Residency Programs.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Residency Writing Coach at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Conducts one-on-one virtual coaching sessions with medical students for the purpose of completing their personal statements for their Residency applications.
  • Guides students through the narrative and structural priorities involved with generating for their written statements, advising them on both form and content to improve the clarity, flow, and organization of their written work.
  • Prepares for upcoming sessions with students by reviewing submitted outlines and rough drafts.
  • Generates recorded workshops for students to enhance personal coaching sessions.
  • Assists students who experience writer's block by conducting brainstorming sessions to identify appropriate content.
  • Coaches students on making revisions to personal statements based on recommendations
  • Employs best practices for composing and communicating feedback for academic and professional writing.
  • Creates and manages scheduling system for appointments
  • Prepares notes on student's progress on a shared platform which is developed and maintained by HMSOM staff.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Masters degree in Writing, English or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years or more years of experience in coaching and/or teaching writing.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office platforms.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • PhD in Writing, English or a related field.

Starting Minimum Rate

Minimum rate of $35.17 Hourly

Certain positions may also be eligible for shift differentials for work performed on evening, night, or weekend shifts.
