Job Summary:

Primary role of a pre-admission testing Register Nurse (RN) is to evaluate patients prior to their arrival to perioperative services, which includes, but is not limited to: completing and documenting a thorough nursing assessment, history and physical as applicable, initiate pertinent patient teaching, initiate and evaluate pertinent diagnostic tests and notify physicians/providers as necessary. Pre-admission testing RN works closely with perioperative staff, surgeons, proceduralists and anesthesia providers to ensure patient readiness for their scheduled procedures.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions 
  • Provides patient care based on standards of care, standards of practice, protocols, and established policies and procedures.
  • Respects each patient as an individual; provides care that fosters the patient’s sense of dignity and positive self-regard.
  • Provides patient/family teaching based on identified learning needs, readiness to learn, and barriers to learning.
  • Collaboratively plans and prepares patient/family for discharge incorporating support systems/resources as necessary.
  • Appropriately delegates and supervises nursing interventions performed by others
  • Appropriately prioritizes patient care (e.g. seeks assistance as needed from appropriate resources, reassigns personnel as necessary, recognizes need for emergency intervention, etc.).
  • Provides thorough, timely, and accurate documentation of all pertinent data, therapeutic interventions and patient responses according to established standards.
  • Provides timely and thorough report on assigned patients to other health care team members to ensure integration of services and continuity of patient care.
  • Promotes learning for colleagues and self (e.g. functions as preceptor, instructor, trainer, attends professional development programs, etc.).
  • Proactively identifies risk to patient safety and identifies opportunities to reduce medical/health care errors (i.e. appropriate reporting of errors/incidents).
  • Identifies ethical issues in care and develops plan to address.
  • Assesses patient pain level as necessary, depending upon diagnosis utilizing the numerical pain scale
  • Obtains supporting information and completes required documentation related to medication reconciliation in the electronic record.
  • Collaborates with surgeon, proceduralist, radiologist, anesthesiologist, cardiologist, primary care physician, etc to assure patients’ wellbeing and appropriate plan for perioperative period.
  • Assures pertinent diagnostic tests (e.g. labs, EKG, xray, etc) are obtained. Communicates abnormal values effectively to medical providers as necessary.
  • Identifies patients correctly by checking patient identification bands and consent forms as well as verifying operative procedure and site.
  • Demonstrates competency in providing infection prevention, pre-anesthesia and post-operative care education to patients, family or health care proxy as applicable.
  • Seeks out learning opportunities, practice recommendations and updates relevant to perioperative care.
  • Exhibits excellent customer relations to patients, visitors, physicians and co-workers. Provides compassionate patient centered care at all times.
  • Demonstrates competency in accurate and thorough documentation of pre-admission nursing assessment, history, physical (as applicable) and pre-anesthesia screening.
  • Maintains all competencies and certifications required for this position

Qualifications

Job Requirements Minimum Education
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
Minimum Work Experience
  • Qualified candidates must have minimum 3 years of experience within Perioperative Services.
Minimum Licenses and Certifications
  • [Massachusetts, United States] Registered Nurses Current MA license and CPR certification required.
Required Skills
  • Must be self-directed; must be able to manage time efficiently; must demonstrate mature professional behaviors, (i.e. tact, empathy and diplomacy); must be willing to work/cross train to other areas within perioperative services if needed.
