About the Role
At Pavago, one of our clients is hiring a Ruby on Rails Developer to build, maintain, and scale modern web applications and APIs.
This is a hands-on software engineering role focused on:
- Ruby on Rails development
- Backend systems and REST APIs
- PostgreSQL / MySQL
- Background jobs with Sidekiq or Resque
- Application performance and scalability
- Testing and code quality
- Third-party integrations
- Production reliability
You’ll collaborate with product managers, designers, and frontend engineers to ship secure, scalable, and maintainable features.

What You’ll Own
Ruby on Rails Development
- Build and maintain production Ruby on Rails applications
- Develop backend functionality using:
- Ruby
- Rails
- ActiveRecord
- MVC architecture
- Design and maintain RESTful APIs
- Build and manage background jobs using Sidekiq or Resque
- Integrate third-party APIs and external services
- Collaborate with frontend engineers working with React, Vue.js, or Stimulus
Database Design & Performance
- Design and maintain PostgreSQL and/or MySQL databases
- Create and manage database migrations
- Optimize database queries and application performance
- Implement:
- Indexing
- Caching
- Query optimization
- Improve scalability, reliability, and data integrity
Testing & Code Quality
- Write and maintain:
- Unit tests
- Integration tests
- System tests
- Work with testing frameworks such as:
- RSpec
- Minitest
- Capybara
- Maintain strong automated test coverage
- Use RuboCop, StandardRB, or similar tools to maintain code quality
- Support CI/CD pipelines for automated testing and deployment
Security & Application Reliability
- Implement authentication and authorization using tools such as:
- Devise
- OmniAuth
- Apply security best practices including:
- CSRF protection
- Input validation
- OWASP standards
- Support GDPR, HIPAA, or other compliance requirements when applicable
- Maintain secure handling of application and customer data
Performance, Monitoring & Production Support
- Optimize:
- Page load times
- API response times
- Background job processing
- Monitor application health using tools such as:
- New Relic
- Datadog
- Honeybadger
- Rollbar
- Troubleshoot production issues and deploy fixes efficiently
- Help maintain high application availability and reliability
Engineering Collaboration
- Partner with Product Managers and Designers to define requirements
- Participate in:
- Sprint planning
- Standups
- Sprint reviews
- Retrospectives
- Provide technical recommendations and realistic effort estimates
- Maintain clear documentation for:
- APIs
- Codebases
- System architecture
- Development workflows
Requirements
Must-Have
- 3+ years of professional Ruby on Rails development experience
- Strong proficiency with:
- Ruby
- Ruby on Rails
- ActiveRecord
- MVC architecture
- Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL and/or MySQL
- Experience with Sidekiq or Resque
- Experience building and integrating RESTful APIs
- Strong Git and version-control workflows
- Experience working with CI/CD pipelines
- Strong understanding of software engineering best practices
- Excellent debugging and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment
- Availability to collaborate during U.S. client business hours
