Job Description

What does a KPFF internship offer?

The structural internship provides an opportunity for structural engineering students to work in a wide variety of building design fields such as educational facilities, healthcare and wellness facilities, commercial and industrial buildings, parking structures, performing arts venues, hospitality and multi-family housing, governmental institutions, and historic renovation projects.  

 

Applicants must be motivated and possess excellent written and verbal skills. Job responsibilities vary depending on available projects at the time of the internship.

Internship Duration:

  • Internships typically last 2.5 to 6 months depending upon candidate's availability, with full-time hours during the summer.
  • Exact start and end dates may vary depending on the student’s availability.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Duties are typically performed in a normal office environment while sitting at a desk or computer table 
  • Ability to actively engage with a computer for several hours per day and communicate over the telephone or virtual meeting platforms. 
  • May occasionally need to lift items up to 15 lbs. 
  • Occasionally project site visits where you will perform field inspections which may involve walking, standing, kneeling, or navigating uneven terrain.
  • Must comply with all safety requirements in the office and on job sites. 

Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in a Bachelor’s Degree program in Civil or Architectural Engineering with an emphasis in structures. 
  • Completion of at least two design courses (e.g., concrete, steel, wood, or masonry) by the start of the internship. 
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above in coursework. 
  • Basic knowledge of structural engineering fundamentals (e.g., free body diagrams, P/V/M diagrams). 
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Strong technical and organizational abilities, with an ability to work collaboratively. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a Master’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering. 
  • Previous internship experience in a structural or civil engineering role. 
  • Completed coursework in Structural Statics and Dynamics, Steel Design, Concrete Design, Wood Design, and Seismic Analysis and Design.
