About this role

Join a School Where We Build, Learn, and Grow Together

About Innovation Charter High School

At Innovation Charter High School, we believe schools can be places where young people are deeply known, challenged, and prepared to shape their futures, and where educators do some of the most meaningful work of their careers.

We are a mission-driven public charter high school in New York City serving students with ambition, care, and urgency. Our team is fiercely committed to improving student outcomes and continuously strengthening the school we are building together.

This is a place for educators who believe:

  • Feedback is essential to growth, for students and adults
  • Curiosity is a driver of strong teaching and learning
  • Great schools are built through reflection, collaboration, and persistence
  • Students thrive when adults hold high expectations and provide deep support
  • Supporting one another as a community and showing up as strong team players matters just as much as individual excellence

We are not interested in maintaining the status quo. We are actively working to create new ways of supporting students and new ways of working together as colleagues. That takes humility, experimentation, resilience, and heart.

Our staff cares deeply. We challenge one another. We learn in public. We keep improving.

If you are energized by joining a dedicated team that is building toward something better, for students and for each other, we'd love to meet you.

About the Role

We are seeking a passionate, equity-driven Computer Science & Software Engineering Teacher (Grades 9-12) to lead our Software Engineering Program (SEP) - a standards aligned course sequence in programming, app design, and game building that culminates in an AP course.

SEP is an initiative of New York City's CS4ALL program, whose mission is to increase the number of high school graduates (particularly from traditionally underrepresented groups) who are ready to pursue new and emerging technology-driven roles, and to develop students' computational thinking and problem-solving skills in real-world contexts.

You will work under the direction of the Principal or their designee to deliver an inclusive, project-based computer science curriculum that gives every student, including those with IEPs, full access to rigorous, standards-based instruction.

This role is ideal for an educator who believes computer science should be both rigorous and inclusive, and who is energized by helping students build the technical and problem-solving skills to pursue emerging tech-driven careers.

What You'll Do

Deliver Inclusive, Rigorous Computer Science Instruction

  • Collaborate with special education co-teachers to meet the mandates of IEPs and ensure all students have access to the curriculum
  • Incorporate student goals, behavior plans, and interventions into daily instruction
  • Employ lesson and unit plans that are standards-based and mission-aligned
  • Report student progress and maintain accurate, up-to-date achievement records, adhering to standards-based grading practices

Use Data to Drive Student Growth

  • Frequently review classroom performance and examination data and adjust instruction to meet student needs
  • Implement students' IEP mandates and work toward IEP-related goals, as applicable
  • Use assessment data on an ongoing basis to improve student performance and inform instruction

Cultivate Innovation's Core Values and Support Students Beyond the Classroom

  • Embody and cultivate the school's core values - innovation, collaboration, respect, activism, integrity, empathy - in your professional practice and encourage students to do the same in their academic work and personal conduct
  • Host a minimum of two hours of weekly supplemental instruction, such as in-school tutoring or open office hours, to provide academic support
  • Plan and lead experiential learning activities and conduct a student advisory
  • Incorporate technology into the classroom and continue developing your own digital learning skills
  • Take on additional duties as assigned by the Principal or designee

Contribute to a Collaborative Adult Culture

  • Engage actively in feedback, coaching, and professional learning
  • Collaborate with colleagues to improve practice and student outcomes
  • Contribute to a culture of reflection, curiosity, and continuous improvement
  • Help create classrooms and a school community rooted in belonging, safety, and high expectations

Who Thrives Here

You may be a strong fit if you are:

  • A relationship-centered educator with unwavering belief in students
  • A reflective practitioner who seeks and uses feedback
  • A collaborator who enjoys co-planning and shared problem-solving
  • A teacher who balances structure, compassion, and rigor
  • Someone energized by building and improving, not just inheriting finished systems
  • Committed to educational equity and serving diverse learners in NYC public schools
  • Someone who is willing to adapt high quality instructional materials (HQIM) to meet the needs of your students
  • Comfortable learning and teaching in a fast-evolving technical field, from programming languages to physical computing and robotics

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • In most cases, candidates must possess and maintain a New York State teaching certification, or be on an active pathway toward certification
  • Fluency, or the ability to become fluent, in Scratch, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python, p5js, and C++
  • Familiarity with physical computing, embedded electronics, 3D design and printing, and robotics

Strongly Preferred:

  • CTE certification, or the ability to become certified
  • Knowledge of the AP Computer Science Principles curriculum
  • Experience using assessment data to inform instruction and intervention

Compensation & Benefits

This is a full-time position with a salary range of $68,902 - $95,000 (based on certified level and experience).  Innovation teachers certified in New York State currently receive the amount on the UFT-DOE salary schedule plus 3%. Benefits include:

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • 401(k) with up to 5% employer match
  • Life insurance
  • Paid family leave
  • Professional development and coaching
  • A collaborative team deeply committed to growth and support

Supervisor & Evaluation

Appraisals are transparent, collaborative, and intended to promote professional growth, based on the accomplishment of the major goals and responsibilities outlined in this job description.

Why Join Innovation
