JOB DESCRIPTION: GRADE SCHOOL MENTOR



Overall Objective: 

To mentor the Grades class & Specialty teachers in upholding the principles and practices of Waldorf education in the best possible way.  



Responsibilities carried by the Grade School Mentor: 

  1. Mentor first-year HVWS teachers and others: this includes completing regular (weekly, bi-weekly or monthly) classroom observations. The observation schedule will be agreed upon at start of the school year and is subject to change upon grade school mentor’s discretion.
  2. Collect and review main lesson block plans & weekly plans. The main lesson block plans will need to be provided the month before the block is taught so the mentee can receive feedback with plenty of time ahead of teaching the block. Lesson plans for weekly classes (form drawing, painting, LA & Math skills…) will also be discussed.
  3. Hold weekly meetings with mentee, even if the mentee teacher was not observed that week.
  4. Create agenda and lead weekly meetings with grades 1-4 class teachers and grades 5-8 class teachers.
  5. Attend all parent evenings of first year class teachers.
  6. Attend parent evenings of other mentee teachers, depending on grade, mentee’s request or grade school mentor’s discretion.
  7. Provide administrative support to class teacher as needed. This can include:
    1. Assisting with creating block & weekly schedules
    2. Assisting with creating back-to-school letter ( by August 20)
    3. Assisting with supplies orders
    4. Assisting with parent communication: pre-read & be cc-ed on all regular monthly parent communications & help with answering parent emails
    5. Providing help with reading/interpreting progress monitoring results
    6. Helping to supply teachers with pedagogical resources ( books, websites, etc.)
  8. Attend parent-teacher conferences (upon mutual agreement with mentee teacher).
  9. Attend other individual parent meetings (upon mutual agreement with mentee teacher).
  10. Proofread PT conference report forms, mid-year &  end-of-year reports.
  11. Participate in all-faculty professional development days.
  12. Attend bi-weekly Faculty Meetings and Grades Meetings, and Specialty Teacher meetings when scheduled.
  13. Commit to continuing education and reflective improvement, including attendance at lectures, workshops, conferences and faculty study, to deepen understanding of Waldorf pedagogy.


Duties shared by all part-time teachers

  • Supervision (playground) assignments according to job time assignment



Time Involvement: 

This is part-time position and follows the established school calendar.  This position will include mentoring for three (3) Grades Teachers followed by and one (1) Specialty Teacher.  Days and hours will be determined based on mentee's schedule.



Hiring and Termination: 

By the College of Teachers and HVWS Board of Trustees, as outlined in the Teacher Search Guidelines for hiring and the Staff Development Guidelines for termination. Preference in hiring for this position will be given to candidates who have 8+ years of Waldorf classroom teaching experience and have completed the Waldorf Teacher Training for Grades 1-8.



Supervision and Evaluation: 

Conducted as outlined in the Staff Development Guidelines.
