GFT is seeking a Traffic Engineer to join our Northeast Transportation Team. This hybrid position will be based out of GFT’s Boston office. This is an exciting time to join our team!

What you’ll be challenged to do:

As a Traffic Engineer, you’ll take on a lead technical role in the planning, design, and delivery of traffic projects that strengthen regional mobility. The Traffic Team is currently involved in safety and design alternative analysis, corridor reconstruction projects, interchange and intersection improvements, bridge preservation projects and bridge replacement projects. Our success has been built on teamwork with our colleagues in highway, bridge, stormwater, and utility design. We strive for innovation and ingenuity in our designs so we can provide the best outcome for all transportation users.

 

You’ll also have opportunities to serve as a task lead, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate directly with project managers and public agency clients. As part of the GFT Transportation Group, you’ll operate in a hybrid work model supported by a culture that promotes continuous learning, professional growth, and leadership development.

 

In this capacity, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Prepare and review design calculations.
  • Research design alternatives, code requirements and present findings.
  • Prepare and review reports, contract drawings, cost estimates and specifications.
  • Communicate regularly with the Project Manager as to expected results, workload, and progress.
  • Advocate for, lead, and mentor entry-level engineers.
  • Communicate and attend meetings with clients, subconsultants, and other project stakeholders.
  • Engage in business development activities including information gathering, preliminary design and proposal writing.
  • Develop accurate and consistent engineering designs and plans with quality presentation, while meeting project budgets, schedules, and company standards.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.

What you will bring to our firm: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering with a focus in transportation from an ABET-accredited university or college.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license, or ability to obtain licensure within 1–2 years.
  • 7-10 years of progressive experience in traffic engineering and design.
  • Synchro and SimTraffic experience.
  • Knowledge of MUTCD & HCM.
  • Knowledge of plan development with CADD: AutoCAD (required), Microstation (a plus).
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Excel and Word for engineering and business applications.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, demonstrate initiative, strong organizational skills, and a commitment to collaboration and continuous improvement.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

 

What we prefer you bring: 

  • Prior experience with Massachusetts Department of Transportation and/or Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority projects preferred including well versed in client design policies, standards and specifications.
  • Experience using VISSIM, Sidra, and SignCAD.
  • Familiarity with  Work Zone analysis.
  • Construction Staging & Temporary Traffic Control Plans & Detour Plans.
  • Traffic signal design.
  • Familiarity with highway design principles.
  • Design-build experience.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to actively engage in multiple perspectives when solving problems, is willing to learn from peers, and encourages reciprocal learning among team members.

Compensation:

The salary range for this role is $110,000 - $145,000; Salary is dependent upon experience and geographic location.
