About this role

The University of Minnesota Department of Neurology and the University of Minnesota Physicians seek a Vascular Neurologist to join our dynamic, rapidly growing cerebrovascular team which supports an 8-hospital system including comprehensive stroke center, thrombectomy-capable stroke center, primary stroke center, and six acute stroke ready hospitals.  This position will join an energetic, highly collaborative team of academic stroke physicians, fellows, research fellows, residents, APPs, and coordinators to provide the highest standard of care across our health system.

Applicants should have the highest level of vascular neurology expertise to care for complex cerebrovascular patients as part of a multidisciplinary group consisting of vascular neurologists, neurointensivists, endovascular surgical neuroradiologists, and open cerebrovascular neurosurgeons. Our program also supports a robust telemedicine network that provides optimal care for stroke patients throughout the state. Outpatient opportunities consist of new referrals, longitudinal care of established patients, TIA clinic, and collaborative specialty clinics such as Stroke-Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Stroke-Cardiology.

In addition to clinical care, a required component of this position is educating our trainees (stroke, neurocritical care, and endovascular surgical neuroradiology fellows, stroke research fellows, residents, and medical students). We also have a core commitment to clinical research, including our role as an NIH StrokeNet Regional Coordinating Center.

In recognition of the intensity of 24-7 state-of-the-art cerebrovascular care, our stroke program primarily utilizes  twelve-hour day and night shifts with minimal long call (>12 hours consecutive coverage). This schedule embodies our continued dedication to a balanced, positive work environment that supports the dual pursuit of excellence in one’s academic medical career and non-clinical interests.

Position Highlights:

  • Provide direct inpatient and outpatient care for patients with stroke and other complex cerebrovascular and neurological conditions

  • Provide comprehensive telestroke coverage including emergency stroke intervention, diagnostic stroke evaluation, and targeted secondary stroke prevention

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams throughout the continuum of care

  • Contribute to quality improvement processes including implementation of novel stroke care delivery paradigms

  • Participate in pivotal local, national, and international clinical trials

  • Additional opportunities for research, teaching, and leadership may be available for qualified applicants

What We offer:

  • An emphasis on education with considerable conference and didactic time dedicated to training three vascular neurology fellows annually, in addition to our residents, medical students, stroke research fellows, and stroke specialist APPs.

  • Excellent academic support for faculty including statistical support, dedicated system-wide stroke research databases, and research mentorship.

  • The University of Minnesota is a regional coordinating center for the NIH Stroke Network with established clinical research infrastructure. We are currently top enrollers in multiple ongoing pivotal phase-III clinical stroke trials.

Expertise, Credentials and Qualifications:

Clinical expertise should be comprised of a medical degree and completion of an ACGME-accredited neurology residency and vascular neurology fellowship. Neurology and vascular neurology expertise should be broad, incorporating hemorrhagic cerebrovascular conditions and the ability to manage urgent non-stroke conditions such as status epilepticus. A commitment to educating trainees and contributing to ongoing clinical trials is essential. Prior telestroke experience is not required, but the individual should possess a strong interest in telemedicine and a desire to work collaboratively to provide for the cerebrovascular needs of our patients.

Qualified applicants must also possess the following:

  • Current or eligible, unrestricted Minnesota State Medical License

  • Board Certified Physician or Board Eligible Physician. If not yet certified, certification should be acquired within 2 years of hire.
