About the role

The Deckhand/Vessel Mechanic plays a dual role, supporting both the operational and mechanical aspects of vessel management. This position involves performing deckhand duties while also taking responsibility for the maintenance and repair of the vessel’s mechanical systems. The role is critical to ensuring the vessel operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with all regulations.


Hourly Range: $39.61 – $ 50.00 per hour

What you'll do

Deckhand:

  • Operational Readiness: Prepare the vessel(s) for operational readiness, ensuring all necessary checks and preparations are completed before departure.
  • Watchkeeping: Stand watch, monitoring for safety and security concerns, and perform other watchkeeping duties such as look-out, Radio Watch, Signal Man, or Helmsman as assigned by the captain.
  • Safety and Emergency Duties: Perform safety functions assigned on the Watch Quarter and Emergency Station Bill, and be familiar with ground tackle, emergency gear, deck gear, and vessel emergency plans.

  • Preventative Maintenance: Ensure deck and engine room preventative maintenance, including lubricating machinery and equipment, and performing minor repairs as needed.
  • Sanitation Duties: work on transferring and pumping sewage and water, and maintain clean passenger spaces, including restrooms, trash areas, common areas, pilot house, and gangways throughout the day, particularly at the beginning and end of shifts.
  • General Duties: Perform other duties as assigned by the captain, ensuring the vessel always operates smoothly and safely.

Vessel Mechanic Duties

  • Preventative Maintenance: Perform routine and preventative maintenance on all vessel mechanical systems, including engines, generators, pumps, and other equipment.
  • Troubleshooting: Diagnose mechanical issues and perform repairs on a variety of vessel systems to ensure optimal performance and safety
  • Equipment Operation: Operate and maintain auxiliary equipment, such as winches, hoists, and other machinery, ensuring all equipment is in good working order.
  • Log Maintenance: Maintain detailed records of maintenance, repairs, and inspections, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Parts and Supplies: Monitor inventory levels of parts and supplies necessary for vessel maintenance and repairs and assist in ordering and replenishing as needed.
  • Emergency Repairs: Respond to and manage mechanical emergencies, ensuring quick and effective resolution to minimize downtime and maintain safety.
  • General Duties: Perform other duties as assigned by the captain, ensuring the vessel always operates smoothly and safely.

Qualifications

  •  Experience in marine mechanical system is preferred.
  • Strong mechanical experience with the ability to diagnose and repair a wide range of vessel systems.
  • Understanding of maritime operations, safety protocols, and environmental regulations.
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn about environmental sustainability practices.
  • Basic Safety Training (BST) certification is preferred.
  • Basic First Aid and CPR certification preferred.
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.
  • Good communication skills and a positive attitude.
  • Basic understanding of maritime operations, safety protocols, and environmental regulations.
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn about environmental sustainability practices.
