The National Network of Hospital-based Violence Intervention Programs (www.NNHVIP.org) has a mission to connect and support hospital-based, community-linked violence intervention and prevention programs and promote trauma-informed care for communities impacted by violence.

Our vision is that all patients and families impacted by violence receive equitable trauma-informed care through their hospital and within their community.

Hospital-based violence intervention programs (HVIPs) vary in the specifics of their design and scope, but typically include a brief intervention in the emergency department or at the hospital bedside as well as intensive community-based case management services following discharge. HVIP services are provided by culturally competent Violence Prevention Professionals who often also serve in a mentorship capacity. HVIPs are rooted in the philosophy that violence is preventable and that violent injury offers a “teachable moment” and unique opportunity to break cycles of violence.  HVIPs embrace a public health approach to violence prevention as they are grounded in data, which indicate that victims of violence are at elevated risk for re-injury and violence perpetration. This model has been the subject of numerous peer-reviewed studies indicating promising impact on injury recidivism, criminal justice contact, and trauma symptoms. HVIPs are now a recommended practice by the federal government.

The network has grown to hundreds of individuals such as physicians, nurses, therapists, gang interventionists, outreach workers and researchers who are affiliated with 38 member programs in the U.S., Canada, England and El Salvador. We hold a sold-out annual conference of over 400 professionals implementing our health approach to violence. Our goal is to support the growth of HVIPs throughout the United States.

Job Description

NNHVIP is seeking a dynamic Violence Prevention Intern to assist on a variety of projects. Some of these projects include helping to plan our annual conference and assisting with NNHVIP communications such as website design/maintenance and social media. The ideal candidate will be passionate about violence prevention, enjoys keeping up with news and social media, and be detail-oriented.

Operations Support

• CRM data management and maintenance.
• Support on invoices and expenses.
• Development of contracts.
• Support in planning annual conference
• Other duties as assigned.

Communications Support

• Website design/maintenance
• Assist with writing and editing press releases, e-newsletters, e-blasts and social media content
• Assist with administrative tasks related to communications

Qualifications

Required Skills

• Passionate interest in violence prevention
•  Well organized, demonstrated ability to prioritize, detailed-oriented
• Project management experience
• Strong writing and editing skills
• Strong interest in media and communications
• Computer skills (proficiency in Word, Power Point, Excel)
•  Able to work some evenings and weekends
• Ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines

Preferred Experience and Qualifications

• Passionate interest in violence prevention and serving urban communities experiencing violence
• Meeting facilitation experience
• Experience with website design and/or maintenance

Additional Information

Time Requirements

Interns typically work between 10-15 hours per week. Must commit to either a  6-month term (June 2019 - December 2019) or a 12-month term (June 2019 - May 2020). This is an unpaid position.
