Purpose of the Job



Works under the direction of the Airfield Supervisor, within the Facilities & Asset Management Department and supervised by the Wildlife Control Specialist. The Wildlife Habitat Control Technician’s responsibility is to maintain all the vegetation on the airfield, the airfield assets, and the maneuvering area surfaces. The Wildlife Habitat Control Technician will also be responsible for completing wildlife control duties.  

 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

 

  • Inspect and maintain all vegetation in and around the airfield
  • Maintain runways/taxiways/aircraft parking ramps in accordance with ICAO standards. This includes surface vegetation control and removal, grading, crack sealing, minor concrete and asphalt repair, and repainting of aprons, the runway, and taxiway markings.
  • Perform sweeping of the runway, taxiways, aircraft parking ramps, and airport roads by operating the mechanical sweeper.
  • Maintain lawns and fields around airport facilities and on airport property both land and airside using a combination of landscaping equipment, (sit-down mowers, weed trimmers, chain saws, and farm tractors).
  • Inspect and perform periodic maintenance on equipment including the mechanical sweeper, mowers, tractor, line painting equipment, crack seal equipment, and trimmers
  • Documents all actions and observations for analysis by completing work orders and reports. 
  • Adhere to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Wildlife Hazard Management Plan (WHMP), Airport Emergency Plan (AEP), and other working documents and established rules and regulations that govern the operation of the airfield and airport employees.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Completion of High School or equivalent
  • Must possess a current certificate for basic safety (NCCER), First Aid, and CPR
  • Physically fit and able-bodied
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license for Light trucks or higher
  • Knowledge of animal identification
  • Ability to operate a computer and word processing, spreadsheet, and database software
  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally over the telephone, and over the two-way radio systems, and in writing
  • Developing and using collaborative relationships to facilitate the accomplishment of work goals.
  • Accomplish multiple tasks accurately with frequent interruptions
  • Ability to operate automotive and specialized mechanical equipment.



Work Conditions

  • Personnel in this position must be available to work a flexible 5-day schedule that covers weekends and holidays when called for to suit operational requirements
  • Extended periods of standing, sitting, and other physically demanding conditions
  • Regular exposure to conditions including heat, humidity, dust, and wildlife unpredictable conditions
  • Must be able to respond as situations arise after hours
  • Maybe requested to work overtime as required
  • Must be able to work with minimum supervision within a team environment
  • Extended periods of walking in external environments on uneven terrain. 
  • Bending, reaching, standing and driving throughout shift. 
  • Exposure to machinery, moving objects/vehicles, dust, allergens, slippery/uneven surfaces, and excessive noise,
  • Lifting and carrying equipment
  • During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
