The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is a United States government agency responsible for enforcing the controlled substances laws and regulations of the country. The agency was created in 1973 in response to the rising drug use and drug trafficking issues in America. The DEA is tasked with investigating and dismantling drug trafficking organizations, as well as prosecuting those who are involved in the illegal production and distribution of controlled substances. It also works to reduce the availability and abuse of illegal drugs through education, prevention, and treatment programs. The DEA is headed by an Administrator who reports directly to the Attorney General of the United States.
