The fifth oldest university in the state, Texas A&M University, Commerce, was established in 1889 as East Texas Normal College. In addition to the Commerce campus, it operates six other campuses in places like Dallas, Mesquite and Rockwall, and it offers more than 100 areas of study at the bachelors, masters and doctoral levels. The Honors College awards 50 top students from each class year with free tuition for all four years. Fourty-eight percent of freshmen receive grants from the school averaging nearly $5,000. Students can study abroad in places like Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Costa Rica, South Africa and Turkey. On campus, they can participate in more than 115 student organizations. Notable buildings on campus include a planetarium and the Rayburn Student Center. In 2010, the university opened a new music building that houses a 600-seat concert hall, rehearsal rooms, and electronic music labs.
