Job Summary:

Performs accounting and/or auditing duties and assists higher level accountants with general accounting work to ensure the accurate recording and reporting of a unit's financial transactions. May specialize in a specific field of accounting such as payroll, cash management, accounts payables/receivables, data control, and/or related fields.

Job Description:

Accountant II

  • Develops, organizes, prepares and updates moderately complex financial statements, journals, accounts, ledgers and reports for various financial needs within an automated financial system to ensure accurate recording and reporting of financial transactions.
  • Analyzes financial reports, data and records, identifies discrepancies, investigates and recommends solutions as needed.
  • Develops and maintains automated financial systems, recommending controls to ensure system reliability and data integrity.
  • Audits reconciliations, journal entries, schedules, reports, and prepares working papers.
  • Provides budget information and projections based on existing data and established policies and procedures.

Accountant III

  • Plans and executes the development, organization, preparation and updating of complex financial statements, journals, accounts, ledgers and reports for various financial needs within an automated financial system to ensure accurate recording and reporting of financial transactions.
  • Analyzes financial reports, data and records, identifies discrepancies, investigates and recommends solutions as needed.
  • Monitors automated financial systems, develops and documents controls to ensure system reliability and data integrity.
  • Audits reconciliations, journal entries, schedules and reports.
  • Develops and manages complex work unit budgets, analyzing funding sources, operational needs, budget trends and financial commitments.
  • Forecasts budget statuses and recommends corrective action.

Job Responsibilities:

Proposed Starting Compensation Range:

Accountant II: $56,763 - $70,949

Accountant III: $68,682 - $85,842


Requirements:

Accountant II: Bachelor's and three years' of experience

Accountant III: Bachelor's and six years' of experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; able to "think outside the box"
  • High attention to detail and commitment to data integrity
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and follow through on tasks
  • Strong Excel proficiency (e.g., formulas, pivot tables, data analysis)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Prior experience with ERP/accounting system transitions (Workday, SAP, Oracle, or similar) preferred
  • Experience in a higher education or nonprofit environment preferred.
