Job Overview

The Digital Initiatives Librarian is responsible for the creation, ingest, management, and preservation of the Georgetown Law Library’s digital assets. Reporting to the Head of Digital Initiatives, this position advises and develops local standards and identifies priorities for digitization. As an experienced member of the Digital Initiatives Department, this position handles complex digitization projects, and refines new digitization and ingest workflows. The incumbent works with the Head of Digital Initiatives to develop cohesive metadata standards for digital collections and assets, is responsible for planning and executing database maintenance projects and manages standards for bulk import and export of digital objects. This position assists in managing the Georgetown Law Library’s digital repository, DigitalGeorgetown, and serves as a point of contact for its shared development with campus libraries.

Additional duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensure access to digital collections through the Law Library’s digital repository and help develop workflows for ingest.

  • Develop detailed metadata standards and workflows for digital collections.

  • Oversee production-level digitization of Law Library materials including developing workflows for staff and students.

  • Coordinate and plan digital preservation activities.

  • Collaborate with Law Library staff to plan and prioritize digitization projects.

Work Interactions

The Digital Initiatives Librarian reports to the Head of Digital Initiatives. This position works closely with other members of the department including the Digital Initiatives Coordinator, the Digital Initiatives Assistant, and student workers. In addition, this position will interact with the Law Center Archivist, Head of Special Collections, and Digital Repository and Preservation Librarian at the University Library.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science (or equivalent).

  • Five to eight (5-8) years of library experience.

  • Experience with digitization best practices and workflows, including the use of large-scale scanning equipment, image editing software, and inventory control procedures.

  • Experience with institutional repository systems, including storing, organizing, securing, and sharing digital assets.

  • Experience managing multiple concurrent digitization projects.

  • Experience using digital imaging and post-processing software, such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Bridge.

  • Knowledge of descriptive metadata schemas such as Dublin Core, MARC, MODS, or METS.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to solve technical problems, implement new equipment and software, and apply technical standards for digitization.

  • Experience in working with data from an Integrated Library System.

  • Experience in an academic library in a university setting.

  • Knowledge of digital preservation systems and best practices.

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$54,616.00 - $100,493.33

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
