Field Service Technician

Job Summary: The Field Service Technician will be responsible for troubleshooting, maintaining, servicing, and repairing pumping and support equipment in a safe and efficient manner, both on-site and at customer sites in the surrounding Edison, NJ areas. We are seeking a mechanically strong field technician with proven hands-on troubleshooting experience on engines and industrial equipment. The ideal candidate can perform basic diesel engine diagnostics (distinguishing fuel, oil, and cooling issues) and is comfortable working independently in the field, tracing problems from symptom to root cause. Direct pump experience is not required; we will train on pump systems and electrical specifics. Preferred backgrounds include HVAC technicians, and automotive or diesel mechanics who want to transition into pump and field service work. The candidate must demonstrate a strong work ethic, high-quality work, and readiness to work in environments that may include sewer bypass applications.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:  To perform the job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   

• Perform routine inspections, preventative maintenance and servicing as directed

• Troubleshoot diesel engine, electrical systems and pump problems.

• Rebuild diesel engines and pump ends.

• Assist customers and/or Xylem personnel in setting up pumping systems at customer job sites as needed. Assist in the performance of start-up duties and ensure any problems are resolved.

• Perform an initial inspection of fleet equipment for possible damages; diagnose damages; report damages to Service Manager.

• Test all repaired equipment for proper operation and quality.

• Perform preventative maintenance on Company vehicles and shop support equipment.

• Perform diagnostic checks using computer technology.

• Participate in the on-call schedule to assist customers after hours.

Minimum Qualifications: Education, Experience, Skills, Abilities, License/Certification:

• 2-3 years of diesel experience and/or training, or a combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position

• Experience with Caterpillar or John Deere equipment highly preferred

• Valid driver’s license with a good driving record

• Ability to obtain a DOT Medical card

• Diagnosing basic mechanical problems

• Thorough understanding of the methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in equipment repair and maintenance.

• Basic understanding of pump station electrical controls and monitoring devices

• General DC electric and circuit testing skills

• General diesel engine component location and identification

• Safety practices and procedures

• Basic mechanical aptitude

• Ability to diagnose complex mechanical and electrical issues--preferred.

• Ability to work independently with little or no supervision; self-motivated and self-directed.

• Ability to communicate effectively with customers, co-workers, and managers both verbally and in writing.

**The estimated salary range for this position is $30- $35/hourly.  Starting pay is dependent on multiple factors, such as skills and experience.  At Xylem we offer a competitive compensation package with a generous benefit package, including Medical, Dental, Vision plans, 401(k) with company contribution, paid time off, paid parental leave and tuition reimbursement**
